HI - Rothenburg Hostel

The Hostelz.com Review

If you're going to Rothenburg ob der Tauber, you have to stay at HI - Rothenburg Hostel -- plus, it is the only hostel in town! The hostel is inside a medieval building located within the city walls, making it an authentic and fun place to stay.

The Location

The hostel is located about a twenty-minute walk from the train station inside the old town walls. Parking is available in front. This hostel is in a great location and is within walking distance to all the historic sites; the main square is about a ten-minute walk away. Also within walking distance are restaurants, shops, and markets. The hostel is located on the outer edge of the town, so it is quiet and safe.

Rooms and Bathrooms

This hostel offers a variety of room types from privates to dorms, and caters to everything from the lone backpacker, families, and school groups. The rooms are clean and each bed has its own plug-in outlet and nightlight. The rooms also typically have a table and chairs. Lockers are also available in the common area and safety does not seem to be an issue. The bathrooms are also clean and the showers have hangers to hang clothes or soap dishes.

Common Spaces

This hostel has a large dining area where free, all-you-can-eat breakfast is served. Lunch and dinner, which you pay for, are also all-you-can-eat. Because meals are provided there is no kitchen for guests to cook for themselves. There is a computer and there is free Wi-Fi, although not all of the rooms get Wi-Fi in them. There are also board games and a book exchange. Because this hostel caters to so many different types of people, it isn't the best place to meet new people, as people typically stick with their own group, but overall this hostel is great if you want a relaxing atmosphere.

Overall, the Rothenburg Hostel is a great place to stay. It is clean; there is a delicious, all-you-can-eat breakfast; and it is located within the old town walls, making it easy to get to all the sites.

Really Good HI Hostel
It's a bit of a trek from the train station to the HI hostel in Rothenburg, but that's about as critical as one can get as the walk takes you right through the historic centre. The building itself is located in a quiet corner of the old city walls and the outdoor areas are very pleasant to relax or picnic in. Good staff all round and as clean and well-cared for as you would expect it to be. Spacious rooms, good beds and strong security system in place. As usual in a HI place, the atmosphere is mixed as the dreaded school groups are inclined to overrun the premises by times, but it's really only a factor at meal times, if your timing is unlucky. There again, breakfast is included and the meal deals are very good. Verdict -- very high standard!

A standard HI hostel situated in 2 buildings in the old town. As the town survives on tourists, it may be good to make a reservation in summer. Rooms and bathrooms are clean, and dorms are single-sex. Breakfast is included and quite good (snag some stuff for lunch). The owners are serviceable but can be harried. There are common rooms, though no one used them while we stayed there. There is all-night access with a passcode. The beds are decent and there are pay-lockers in the rooms. There is internet access in the main building. As this is an HI hostel, a surplus of school kids is the norm. The biggest downside is the walk from the train station (20 minutes, though half is to get to the old town). Not really a place to hang out inside although there are plenty of benches and gardens outside. Bottled beer is sold at reception. In sum, aside from the kids, this is a great place to stay while seeing the town.
Our family of five stayed here during the festival of the mayor and it was a wonderful place to stay -- clean and comfortable. You sleep in dorms which are separated according to sex. They are not huge dorms though which makes it nicer. The bathrooms were very nice too -- lots of hot water, clean, and roomy. There also was a good breakfast included with our stay. Altogether it was a nice place and I wouldn't hesitate to stay here again.
I stayed here for two nights. It's very clean, and has friendly people and staff. The location was far enough away from the city center to be quiet, but close enough to easily walk to all the excitement. Highly recommended.
Great hostel! It is located at the edge of the old town and it is very quiet. Everyone was really friendly and there is a huge breakfast included. They have a book trade, too. Although the showers were super clean, if you can upgrade to a private shower in your own room it is totally worth it. The hostel is highly recommended!
Really good breakfast. The rooms are clean and the location is good. The only bad thing is that a big group of school-children were there at the same time as us. If you don't want to listen to 12 year-old girls screaming, then maybe you should look elsewhere. Otherwise, I enjoyed my stay.
This hostel was something I was a bit worried about because I could find no one else who had rated it, but it was actually really wonderful. It was by far the cleanest place we've stayed. Spotless, really. It's a nice location, very quiet in the rooms, the showers are perfect and very, very, very warm. It was truly wonderful. Don't hesitate to come!
