Tube 'n Axe Backpackers Lodge is one of the many backpackers hostels available here in the tiny village of Storms River, just of the N2 highway between Plettenberg Bay and Jeffreys Bay; it's a very popular stop for most tourists doing the coastal tour.
The Location
Nothing is very far from anything else in Storms River, so you'll have no trouble finding Tube 'n Axe -- or any other place, for that matter -- as there are enough signposts around to guide you.
Rooms and Bathrooms
There's quite a wide choice of accommodation at Tube 'n Axe, from a fourteen-bed dorm and a six-bed dorm right up to en suite twin, double, and family rooms; chalets; and luxury tents. The grounds are leafy and forested and there are boardwalks leading to the rooms and tents towards the rear of the property. The dorms are clean and roomy with good duvets and extra blankets, but the mattresses are thin and cheap. The beds in the six-person dorm have large drawers under the bottom bunk for storage and there are a couple of power points. None of the individual bedside lights were working when we stayed there, though.
The dorm has its own bush toilet and bathroom. The toilet is a composting one with buckets of sawdust provided. The shower isn't great, as the water is only lukewarm, and on a winter's day, not what you need!
The private rooms and the luxury tents are really lovely. If you're prepared to part with some extra cash, you'll be really comfortable in these. Most are en suites and they all have their own tea and coffee station, towels, and complimentary mints.
Common Spaces
Each room, including the dorms, has its own little sitting area outside. The main building houses the reception at the guesthouse shop, which sells wet suits and the other sports goods. Here, you'll find the dining room and social area. There's a bar, a kitchen from which you can order meals, table football, a pool table, dart board, flat-screen TV, and the tea and coffee station (the drinks are not free, however). Just off the social room is a sitting room with sofas and the guests' kitchen. They were installing a new cooker when we stayed here, so it was a bit of a mess, but we could see it has a kettle, toaster, microwave, and a fridge. It is a little light on pots and pans, but there is enough crockery and cutlery. Outside the social room, there is a braai (BBQ) and bonfire area, which is under cover, and a swimming pool and sun loungers. Considering we visited during the rainy winter months, they had kept the swimming pool remarkably clean. Free Wi-Fi is provided and the signal is pretty good around the reception and bar area, and reaches as far as the six-bed dorm.
Summary
This is a very professional place. It sells tours and activities and they are well advertised throughout the guesthouse. The restaurant serves good meals, but there are plenty of options elsewhere in the village. The local mini-market sells the basics, if you prefer to self-cater, though, the kitchen is tiny. The swimming pool area is extremely nice and relaxing to sit out in and kept immaculately. There were few people staying there when we were there, but we can see there would be a great atmosphere here when it's close to being full. Not an intimate place, but a good choice, particularly if you want to do a lot of activities around Storms River, as they can all be organized at Tube 'n Axe.

Description
Our lodge is a beautiful old Cape Dutch style building, with inviting double rooms and large dorm beds. A canopy of black-wood trees covers the property where you'll find our elevated bush camp, and plenty of secluded camp sites where you can pitch your tent or sleep under the stars...
There's a cozy open plan lounge with a jet master fireplace, internet facilities, a vibey African bush style entertainment and bar area equipped with big screen satellite TV, pool table, table soccer and bungee chords for those about to jump.
And we make Lekker Kos (delicious food)! We open our kitchen in the morning at seven and close again at nine at night so we guarantee to keep your tummy full with delicious food from bacon & blueberry pancakes in the morning to our rich sprinbok potjie at night with a selection of in-betweeners like hot soup and fresh home made bread, scrumptious sandwiches, creamy chicken & bacon pasta and zesty couscous salad.
We also have a fully equipped self-catering kitchen and braai facilities for those who prefer to whip up their own feast!
Our North facing lounge opens out onto a warm sunny verandah, which in turn opens out onto a large front lawn (perfect for volleyball, rugby, cricket, or for just soaking up the sun!) with two huge old oak trees pitted against a breath-taking view of the stunning Tsitsikamma mountain range.

• Driving: From the N2 turn into Storm's River Village (NOT Storm's River Mouth), and at the Stop turn right on to the dirt road. The hostel is 50 meters ahead on the left.
• Mailiners (Intercape, Translux, Greyhound etc.) drop you off 5 kilometers away so call to be picked up.
• The Baz Bus drops you on our doorstep.
