If you're in Killarney, Railway Hostel Killarney is simply a great place to stay for a great price. This large hostel is friendly, well equipped, and conveniently located very close to the city centre.
The Location
Railway Hostel Killarney is located up a little side street, just off the busy Park Road. It is only a couple of minutes' walk to Killarney's small but charming city centre and is across the road from an outlet mall. It is also convenient to multiple large supermarkets, such as Tesco and Aldi, and, as its name suggests, is only a short distance from Killarney's train and bus stations. The hostel also has about four free car parks located just next to the entrance for those that are driving.
Rooms and Bathrooms
The hostel offers a variety of different room sizes -- from private rooms to three- to ten-bed dorms. The rooms are clean, comfortable, and spacious. They are also secure, with swipe-card access required, and have good, wide beds. Each bed also has access to power points for charging electronics.
The toilets and showers can be found in separate blocks on the first floor. There are a couple of additional toilets on the ground floor as well. The toilet and shower blocks are all kept very clean and the ones on the first floor even appear to be quite new, or at the very least well maintained. The showers are timed, and unfortunately, you cannot adjust the temperature, but the pressure is good and the temperature has quite a good heat anyway.
Common Spaces
The hostel has a large kitchen with good facilities. The layout is also quite good, meaning that guests don't get in each others' way too much. The only thing the kitchen does lack is an oven. A free, light breakfast of bread, spreads, cornflakes, and oats is also served from 7:30 to 9:30 a.m.
The hostel also has a great dining room, with room to seat probably about thirty people. The kitchen and dining spaces are both kept very clean and the dining room is also great for sitting around and meeting others, working on your laptop, or simply just hanging out. There is also a separate, small lounge room with a TV in it for those wanting to chill out on the sofa.
Summary
Railway Hostel Killarney provides great accommodation, in a great location for an excellent price. These reasons make it a pretty hard hostel to beat in Killarney.
Good location
Good amenities, within walking distance of the local town. Rooms, kitchen, and bathrooms a bit dirty.
great place to stay.
good atmosphere. good and accurate info from the stuff, also very helpful.
I stumbled upon the Railway in '96, and I've been back five times since! This and the Sugan are the ONLY places to stay in Killarney. There are always interesting people to buzz with. Enjoy.
This place was cool. It has small dorms. It's quiet, a bit grubby, and friendly. It's okay.
Maybe it was because we were staying in the off season, but they had let a huge contingent of homeless-type people into the hostel. It was pretty uncomfortable for the travelers, because some of the people acted pretty crazy.
This place is excellent. The staff were friendly as (I think that's just Ireland in general) and the facilities were excellent. Very close to the bus and train, and a 5-minute stroll into the guts. I'd stay here again in a flash!
After checking out some other hostels in Killarney, I chose this one and I didn't regret it. It's a great place. It's big, but cosy, with a nice staff.
