If youre looking for a party hostel, or even a place to meet other travelers, Hostel Tabor - Hostel Bernarda Bolzana may not be the place for you. If youre looking for affordable accommodations right in the heart of beautiful Tabor, and would welcome a bit of quiet and possibly even a room to yourself at hostel prices, Bernarda Bolzana is perfect.
Hostel Tabor is about a fifteen-minute walk from the bus/train stations. Located in the historical old town, the hostel is only a minute or two from the grand town square and other attractions. The hostel is also close to a supermarket and many restaurants and places to pick up snacks. Tabor itself is a great base for exploring nearby sights -- other historic towns like Pisek and Bechyne, ruined castles like Borotin and Choustnik, the Chynov caves, and many forested trails.
Rooms and Bathrooms
The rooms are clean, nice, and well heated, with reading lamps, wardrobes, small tables, and no bunk beds. There are no lockers, but if youre not there at a busy time, you might well have a room completely to yourself anyway. The room doors lock, as does the front door. Be aware that linens are included, but towels are not. Bathrooms are clean, well kept, and sufficient in numbers. Hot water can be spotty, so you might want to test before you get ready to shower, and perhaps try again later if the waters not warm enough.
Both floors of the hostel have basic kitchenettes with limited dishes and an electric kettle. You might find a few basics like instant coffee, tea, and sugar available for use, but theres not much else in the way of community food or spices. One floor has a fridge and the other has a microwave, but theres no stove or oven anywhere. Both floors also have a common area with couches, tables, chairs, and Wi-Fi. Theres also a foosball table on one floor. Using these areas at night is a little problematic, because the lights are on automatic timers and go off very quickly. On the lower floor you only have about thirty seconds before you have to hit the switch again.
Reception is never really open. If you need anything, you have to call the posted telephone number. During specific hours, you can also reach staff by ringing the doorbell. If you dont have a phone, be sure to communicate with them by e-mail ahead of time and arrange for them to be available when you arrive, so you can just use the doorbell.
This is not your standard hostel; think of it more as a small pension. The hostel is in the building of a nonprofit school, and the proceeds of your stay go back to the children. They offer very affordable rates and discounts for HI members and ISIC card holders. Though its not a very social hostel, its got a spectacular location right downtown and its a great base for exploring Tabor and the rest of the region.
