Villa Viva Cape Town Reviews

The backpack is a spotlessly clean hostel with helpful and friendly staff. It's only five minutes away (walking) from Long Street's clubs and shops. There's an in-house bar (and restaurant) which sells very cheap beers. It has a fireplace in the corner and a very warm and relaxed atmosphere. Great views of the table mountains either from the inner courtyard or the terrace add to the charm.

There are private safes and a large and well furnished kitchen for guest's use. All the rooms are named after animals, the bathrooms are cleaned many times a day, and all have large showers. There's a TV lounge, a book exchange shelf, and loads of pamphlets for activities in and out of South Africa.

Good Hostel

The Backpack is a nice youth hostel. It is located in a good area of Cape Town, so you can easily walk around during the day. At night you should take precautions since Cape Town can be rough. The hostel itself offers a fine kitchen, sandwiches for sale, cooked-to-order breakfast, and reasonably priced bar, among other things.

Fantastic introduction to Cape Town

This was my first time in Cape Town and I'm so glad we stayed at the Backpack. We arrived late in the night and couldn't see the mountain so it was a shock waking up to such a beautiful view in the lobby area! Several little gardens and secret areas to explore at this hostel. Staff was amazingly friendly and helpful. Within walking distance of Long St and several restaurants -- only needed a cab twice or so. Rooms were kept very clean and having a private bathroom was a blessing! Daily pick ups for various tours in the area so you never run out of things to do. Would certainly stay here again and suggest others to do so.

Great place and great value

Visited in April 2012. Well-decorated, calm ambiance, very safe and clean. Staff incredibly helpful with Cape Town excursions and information. Close to Table Mountain and other sights. Seems very classy for a hostel, but isn't more expensive than other places.

HI - Cape Town -The Backpack Hostel is Fair Trade-recognised (a trademark awarded to businesses that adhere to fair trade criteria; fair wages and working conditions; fair operations; purchasing and distribution of benefits; ethical business practices; and respect for human rights, culture, and the environment). This is the perfect base for your stay in Cape Town. The bar and restaurant regularly puts on backpacker evenings and the breakfast and snack menu (not included), is great!

The Location

This hostel is conveniently located between the city and the base of Table Mountain. Only a five-minute walk to Green Market Square in Cape Town but far enough outside of the city to get a good nights rest. Easily accessible by car or public transport are Table Mountain and the beautiful beaches of the Cape.

Rooms and Bathrooms

Rooms are perfectly clean and cater for everything from eight-bed dorms to private ensuite rooms with balconies. There is even a teepee that sleeps two people. Bathrooms are bright and spacious with personal toilet and shower blocks. All beds come with fresh towels and linen.

Common Spaces

You can relax by the outdoor pool, have a sun downer on the bar deck, or cosy up on the couches by the fire in winter. There is plenty of space for socialising -- the bar puts on themed backpacker events most nights as well or you can meet friends in any of the inviting common areas.

If you are looking for a little more than just a regular budget backpackers, this is the whole package! Off season, the party atmosphere can be lacking, but regardless, this is one of Cape Town's top places to stay. On top of this they pride themselves in being a fair organisation so by staying here you are also giving back to the local community. As the name suggests, there is a great (and friendly!) travel centre open until 10 p.m. each day. Book ahead to ensure you get to experience a night in the teepee!

visited capetown originally for a couple of days prior to traveling up the coast to joburg, ended up staying for nearly four weeks. its a place i'd love to call home -- overlooking the big mountain, right by long street. you just cant go wrong --

what a place! set the standard for the rest of the trip, the staff are great, food is wicked and the beer at 70 pence a go -- priceless. had a really good time, made at home by the best group of staff and other travelers. at the centre of everything in capetown. reccomend anyone going to south africa to firstly go to cape town and secondly make sure you're booked into the backpack.

I stayed at this place just for a weekend from Friday to Monday. They have several dorm style rooms and some double bed rooms as well. I was amazed by the pool and the included view on table Mountain. Really a good thing to have after a warm day. Beds, rooms, showers and the restaurant are clean and excellent. Internet was available too, but I would recommend to look for some cheaper place. Although it is still cheaper than in Europe, and it's even fast, so you could check everything within 15 minutes (min rate). There was even a little bit of entertainment during my stay. Some of the Irish guys gave a "Nightwalking"-performance during his stay at my dorm room. Well so far so good. Next time when I'm in CPT I will definitely start my trip here. You never who you might meet and continue to travel on with. Greetings from Germany.

"Arguably still the BEST", Lonely Planet 2001. Well-traveled staff in Africa Travel Centre, rated "…the best place to make your travel bookings". Digital safes in each double room and private safes for dormitory guests. Great central and safe location nestled between Table Mountain and Cape Town City Centre. Famous traditional fish braais (BBQ) and locate nights out.
