Hue Backpackers Hostel

The Review

Hue Backpackers Hostel is a huge hostel that's part of a chain with locations in Hanoi, Hoi An, and Huế. This is very much a backpacker's hostel with a lively and social atmosphere. The staff speak a good amount of English and there seems to always be several Western travelers staying long term who can help with travel and transportation arrangements. There is good Wi-Fi connection and TVs in the common area that continuously broadcasts sports. There is also complementary breakfast and a free beer after checking in.

The Location

This hostel is located in a lively area. There are plenty of bars and restaurants within walking distance; it's situated in an area geared toward Western tourists, as all the surrounding bars and restaurants serve predominately Western food. There are a couple mini marts, as well as clothing stores, which sell typical backpacker wear, like elephant pants and Vietnam shirts.

It is very close to the main river that cuts through Huế, the Perfume River and the Citadel Gate is about two-and-a-half kilometers away. The hostel also arranges airport transfers for a fee, which is a nice touch as Vietnam is notorious for its taxi driver scams.

Rooms and Bathrooms

There are several bed options at this hostel. In the main building, there are dorm rooms with both single and double bunk beds. It's a bit peculiar that this hostel offers double beds in the dorm rooms. It's advertised so couples can sleep together while still being in a dorm room with other single travelers.

The rooms are a bit tight, but are relatively clean. There are lockers underneath each bunk bed large enough to put away large backpacks. Each bed has a small shelf, plug, and personal light. This hostel also offers private rooms, but they're located in a building across the street. Guests staying in that building still share facilities with the building housing all the dorm rooms.

There is an en suite bathroom within each dorm room. It's nice the toilet and the shower are separated, so a fellow roommate can shower while others use the toilet.

Common Spaces

The rooms and bathrooms are fairly basic, but what possibly draws guests to this hostel most is the atmosphere. There is a huge common area on the main floor. On one side, there is a full-service kitchen and on the other is a full-service bar. There are plenty of tables inside, as well as ones on the patio. The main area is actually completely open, with not much obstructing the street view.

On the second floor, where all the door rooms are, is a lovely balcony. There are plenty of chairs here where you can laze around. It can get loud and rambunctious at night time, though, especially with the added noise from neighboring restaurants and bars.

Hue Backpackers Hostel is a great place to meet other backpackers and party. They also organize tours and activities, as well as help with organizing transportation.

Good, not great
This is the only real hostel in Hue, so I stayed here out of necessity. The entire ground floor of the place is devoted to a bar serving cheap drinks and western food (actually the entire neighbourhood is marketed to foreign traveler so you have to go further if you want cheap street food or to get away from tourists) which gets quite busy until late at night. Some travelers will enjoy this, but I prefer hostels which are a little more subdued. The rooms are basic and there's only one shower and one bathroom for each dorm, so they get a little busy. Wireless doesn't work properly in the dorms and the whole place can feel a little cramped. The staff on reception were nice enough, but didn't really go out of their way to engage with me or offer any advice which was a shame. I felt like an anonymous customer rather than a guest, which is my standard of great hostels. But the price is good, it's clean and with no other similar places in Hue, it's alright to pitch up at for a night or two.

Hue Backpackers Hostel is an amazingly fun, laid back, safe, clean, and welcoming hostel in a prime location just minutes from the river and the Citadel in central Huế. The Location Hue Backpackers is located on a small street among a cluster of budget hotels, bars, and restaurants on the opposite side of the river from the Citadel. Cyclos or taxis will deliver you here for a reasonable price from the train station, airport, or wherever your bus happens to drop you off. Rooms and Bathrooms The dorm rooms are not the most spacious, but this is common in Asia. The beds are comfortable and the bed linen is clean, as is the entire hostel, including dorm rooms, common spaces, and en suite toilet/shower rooms. Everything is also well maintained. The beds are bunks with convenient and large lockers underneath the bottom bunk for luggage storage. The showers have shelves, trays, and hooks for all your personal items. The only problem with the combined toilet/shower room is, once again, the shortage of space. There is hardly room to turn around. Common Spaces The hostel has several common areas of note. The first, and closest to the dorms, are the balcony areas on each floor. These are wide, wooden-floored and of colonial style with hanging baskets to decorate and deck chairs for seating. Many guests choose to sit here while making use of the hostel's free Wi-Fi, or simply to sit and read. There is also an internet corner on the ground floor with two free-to-use computers, although these are almost always busy at any given time of day or night. Finally, there is the bar area on the ground floor which is a great place for meeting like-minded travelers -- it is one of the best hostel bars there is. The atmosphere is kept lively and light. The music is loud, but only until 11 p.m. so people still get a chance to sleep (then many guests move on together to one of the other bars in the area). The drink is cheap, and even cheaper at happy hour when it's buy one, get one free. The bar also serves food. The burgers in particular come recommended and everything is prepared fresh. There is a light breakfast included in the bed price, which is also served here in the morning. Summary This is the best budget option to make the most of your time in Huế, especially if you like somewhere lively in the evening. While we were there we even met people who checked out of their private room at a hotel of the same price to move in here. That's about as good a review as the place could be given.
