Simplon Youth Hostel

The Review

Simplon Youth Hostel is a bare basics hotel built inside a converted raincoat factory.

The Location

The hostel has a great location for exploring what Groningen has to offer, all within easy walking distance. This means you also have lots of restaurant and bar options close by as well as a supermarket within a two-minute walk. The Groningen Train Station is about two kilometers from the hostel, so you can catch a train to Groningen Noord then walk about ten minutes. Or you can catch bus number one or two from either station and get off right in front of the hostel or at other bus tops nearby. Longer-distance buses should also stop outside Groningen Train Station. Parking is possible in a nearby paid parking garage.

Rooms and Bathrooms

Simplon Youth Hostel has a mix of dormitory and private rooms across two floors. Dorms range in size from small at just six beds up to the larger dorms that have twelve, eighteen, and twenty beds. Dorms are very basic with simple wooden, sturdy bed frames. Power points are limited to where you can find the few scattered ones around the room. Dorms lack air conditioning or openable windows, so sleep is unbearable during summer (two fans are brought in when the temp reaches thirty-seven degrees Celsius, but that doesn't do much for most people in an eighteen-bed dorm where the beds are blocked from each other for privacy). Lockers are available in the hallway with a deposit. Private rooms are available in single, double, triple, quad, and six-bed so you have a good selection of rooms if you need more privacy at a basic price. A two-bedroom apartment is also available to be rented.

Bathrooms are shared for all rooms with just two showers, and two female and one male toilet for the dorm rooms. Showers are located in the entrance way of one of the dorm rooms, which makes staying in that dorm room quite uncomfortable as you can hear people showering at all hours of the day. Showers are also of the push-button variety that is completely outside of the shower, so every minute you need to leave the shower to press the button to start the too-hot temperature water that you can't control either. One of the showers also doesn't lock. More showers and toilets are available on the ground floor for the private rooms on that floor. The bathrooms and dorms are usually pretty clean, and the hostel is also relatively quiet.

Common Spaces

The common areas of this hostel include a small lounge/seating area at reception as well a terrace in front of the hostel. These spaces are also part of the hostel's restaurant, which means you are restricted in what you can do in these areas, like being able to eat your own food there after a certain time or drinking alcohol. The restaurant serves a paid breakfast buffet daily as well as lunch and dinner on certain days of the week. Free Wi-Fi is available throughout the hostel, as are a luggage storage and a laundry.

The hostel could be good, but it's got a long way to go before it's comfortable, especially during summer when the temperature is too unbearable to sleep.

Well as you can see, I'm Dutch. But anyway, I stayed here one night as well. We were with a lot of people and we were going out that night. Normally a youth hostel is closed after 3 o'clock, but this hostel was open the whole night. So we all could go in and go out whenever we want to. That was great and it was no problem at all. The staff is very friendly, it is clean and inexpensive. I recommend it. Maybe when I'm going to Groningen again, I'll stay there!
During a folk singers' meeting I stayed there for several days. It is very clean and inexpensive, the staff is very friendly and helpful, and the abundant breakfast I appreciated very much. It was not very loud in the nights. I am afraid that I fought back unconsciously by snoring heavily as I was told in the morning. All things considered I can highly recommend it.

Simplon Youth Hostel is surprisingly the only hostel to be found in the college town of Groningen. The hostel itself is located in an old paint factory with a courtyard in the front, and the surrounding buildings look like they have not been kept up. It is on the outskirts of the city center and it's not more than a 5 min walk to the main city square, and a 20 min walk from the central station. There are dozens of restaurants and bars, as well as a few those famous Dutch "coffee shops" conveniently located around the hostel. The hostel also has scrap books filled with menus and advice from staff members and former visitors to help you find a restaurant or something to see or do while in town. The hostel has a friendly atmosphere, and the staff is proficient at English. The bottom floor has the bedrooms, showers and laundry room. Upstairs you will find the dormitories, bathrooms, and lockers. The rooms are decently clean, with squeaky metal bunks with very well used mattresses. The hostel rents linen for a fixed price incase you are in need of it. The showers had mildew growing in them and smelled of mold, which is uninviting to say the least. The hostel has a lockout time between 12:00-15:00 for cleaning and there is no nightly curfew, although to get in during the evening you will have to show a staff member your receipt to get in as they do lock the doors. Even though this is not a party hostel, you can probably expect to hear people coming in from partying during all hours of the morning, which can be a problem for those who are interested in getting good nights sleep. There is an optional breakfast that runs from 8:30-11:30 which mainly consists of cold cuts, various breads and cheeses, fruits and coffee & tea. It's all you can eat, so it's a good way to eat pretty cheaply if you are hungry. The reception desk also sells snacks such as candy bars and chips, as well as drinks all day. The common area has a TV, and some board games. Smoking is also allowed in the common area. You will also find an internet terminal with rates varying upon the length of usage. There are lockers available with a refundable €10 deposit. They also have a laundry room where they charge per load. This hostel welcomes everyone so you will come across some travelers who are defiantly not in their youth. This is overall not a bad place to stay and a good location to explore Groningen from.

Good: clean, hot showers that work, lockers (10E) refundable. Bad: 1 to 3hr lockout for cleaning 12-3? people at front desk disorganized. they overbooked my bed, and put the stuff i left there in the lost & found. the person that was double booked on my bed tried to climb into the bed while was still in it!
I stayed here for one night only, and it's a very good hostel. Staff are friendly, the town centre is really nearby, breakfast is okay, showers are good and the rooms are clean and the decoration is really nice. The only bad thing I can say about this hostel is that it was a bit loud when a group of students arrived in the middle of the night.
Brill place to stop. Staff are friendly. Two minutes from town centre.
