Clean and affordable hostel in Luxembourg
Clean and affordable. The rooms were clean and cozy as was the Hostel.
Less Youth Hostel, More Elderly Hostel
This was a very disappointing end to a long trip around Europe. The staff were pretty unwelcoming on the whole, and twice gave me directions that were such laughable long-cuts I ended up ignoring them, once I wished to go to the American Memorial and Cemetery a couple of miles east. I was told I had to go all the way to the west of the city to get the bus all the way back through the city and past the hostel again, this was just awful advice. As a backpacker the hostel had absolutely zero atmosphere, there is no real bar, just a cafeteria that closes fairly early, you can't play pool of table tennis after 10pm, and there is little to do in the evenings which doesn't require a long walk uphill. There is also no internet access in the rooms which for a hostel of this size is just strange. The majority of the guests also seem to be families or school groups, a backpackers worst nightmare.
Average at best
Wi-Fi access was only available in the reception/cafe, not in any of the bedrooms. There was city-wide Wi-Fi (not free) but the signal to that dropped about 3 minutes walk from the hostel. There were no power sockets next to the beds. It was 20 per night but it included breakfast (06:30 to 09:00) and you got about 1.50 back when you left the hostel.
Clean, efficient and great value but lacks travel vibe
This hostel is more like a hotel. It is clean and very efficiently run by the staff and offers a great value in a generally expensive city. It has an awesome breakfast buffet. It is in a great location offering an easy walk to most everything you would want to see in the city. It is very institutional and feels like a hotel. It does not have a travelers vibe and the front desk staff really do not interact with travelers except for checking them in. It would be great if they had someone that organized events for travelers and encouraged people to interact. Perhaps they do more of this in the summer season. The restaurant in the hostel has really good food at a great price. As long as there are no Stag or Doe parties which they do allow it is pretty quiet.
Luxembourg City Hostel isnt bad at all for an HI. Its new, bright, and clean.
The Location
The hostel offers low cost shuttles to the airport and train station, a really good bet considering its located down a huge hill and lugging backpacks and whatnot up or down the hill is no fun. If youre not taking the shuttle from the train station you take bus 9 in the direction of Neudorf and ask to get off at the hostel. When you get off cross the street and follow the steep path alongside the bridge. Being down a hill, the hostel isnt the most conveniently located (everything is uphill from it) but it is pretty close to the city center and most things are within walking distance. The area is safe enough to walk in alone.
Rooms and Bathrooms
The hostel has two types of rooms, four beds with ensuite bathroom, and six beds without private bathrooms. The beds are bunk beds and guests pay an unadvertised dollar extra for a room with a bathroom. Each room has lockers for each guest and a small table with a few chairs. Linens are provided but you have to make the beds on your own.
The ensuite bathrooms are a toilet in one compartment and a separate compartment with a shower and sink. The rooms and bathrooms are kept clean in this updated hostel, much better than most. A major problem with the shower is that it is push button and its difficult to turn the knob to control the water temperature. All doors are key card-controlled so the hostel is pretty secure.
Common Spaces
This hostel has many different common areas. There is an outdoor patio, a family room with a TV, a bar/restaurant, the hostel lobby, and the cafeteria/breakfast room. Breakfast is included in the price of the room and you get bread, some meats and fruits, yogurt, and your normal breakfast selection of drinks. The bar, in addition to serving drinks, has televised sporting events. There are also vending machines and lockers in the lobby for you to leave your luggage until check out. Overall the hostel is pretty quiet and not at all social. People mostly stick to their traveling groups, and considering it is family friendly, it isnt really a place to have a drink and get to know your fellow travelers.
Summary
The Luxembourg City Hostel is not a bad deal for the money. You may want to consider that they accept group reservations and will book the entire hostel for one group so a bed may be hard to come by. The place isnt at all fun or social but its not a bad place to stay if youre with friends or dont mind being on your own to see this city.
Nice to stay
we stayed there only for one night. everything is very clean and tidy. the breakfast was great! But there is no hostel atmosphere. nevertheless I would stay there again!
You've seen it all before
it's a normal HI. the en-suite rooms were clean, security was tight, it has no kitchen, an expensive bar/cafe, and average breakfast. the location is perfect for sightseeing and going around the old town, take the bus from the train station. it's nothing special and if this city had another hostel (an independent one), i'd probably stay there.
Modern with a good atmosphere
The staff were a little flustered because some guest was complaining that they didn't speak spanish at a hosteling international place! Seeing as these guys spoke french, german, english, letzebuergsch, and in some cases, dutch and italian this seemed a little silly and this guy would have a fit if he went to the U.K. or Australia! Breakfast was good, room was clean, good bathroom, very modern. Security was good with key card access. Bit of a walk to station, but the area is nice to walk around. Recommend it.
I strongly recommend Luxembourg city hostle to others.
I had to change rooms mid stay for some reason even though I had 1 booking. Initially I was in a room with an ensuite which was good and clean, I was then moved to a room with shared facilities and the shower was disgusting. Both rooms were painfully hot during the night, but how often do they experience +30 temperatures so its probably fine most of the time. The breakfast was disappointing. The staff came off rude most of the time. On a positive the location is good.
The price and location cannot be beat. They have nice large lockers for every bed. The staff was very helpful and the facilities very clean. I will say that if you have difficultly climbing hills, this is not your best option. It was located on the bottom on a very large hill which was even difficult for me (I consider myself in very good shape)
The hostel was nice and clean. The location was great, near to the old town and to lots of restaurant and bars if you want to eat out. The hostel also have its own bar and restaurant.
The hostel were in someways more like a hotel, with lots of families staying there. So not ideal if you want more of a relaxed atmosphere.
Also our dorm room was excruciatingly hot so if you going there during the summer, hope you get a room on the lower floors.
Great location. Very fairly priced restaurant, the free breakfast was an unexpected perk.
Bedroom very hot with no aircon or fan, only able to slightly open the window due to safety.
Clean and chill place to stay that is in a very central spot in Luxembourg. There are a lot of spaces and common rooms and the dining area is clean and large, there is also plenty of outdoor spaces and activities on the campus (table tennis, grills, lounge spaces with TVs).
It was a bit confusing to get to the hostel, however most of the reason being tied to the topography of the region. Unthinkable to get here carrying luggage, I thank god I was still doing just backpack trips by then
Breakfast was not the best. And we did not get deposit money back for the card.
Cosy hostel with great location. Not much going on but reliable place to stah
Amazing location close to the city center. Perfect stay for a long weekend.
Pros: great staff both at the front desk and in the restaurant. Gui was very helpful.
Cons: Location from the train station is quite far.
Ok hostel the staff could learn about custom service...
The facilities were great. Staff was nice as well. Located down in the valley but not a horrible walk up into the busier parts of town. Not near a train station but at least buses are free. Was a little bit warm at night.
Overall great hostel. Friendly staff and very clean. There isn't a shared kitchen however there is use of a room with a microwave and plates and cutlery. There is also an onsite restaurant which is very affordable and tasty.
Nice place to stay. A little bit difficult to find when is your first time. It nice atmosphere, but a bit noisy because of the number of teenagers. Simple but good breakfast. Nice, secure, and clean.
The location is the best thing about this hostel . Its so conveniently located and you get a great view from your room ! Dont think twice before booking . Probably the best in Luxembourg
Good location - the hostel is within walking distance of the main attractions of the city and there is a bus stop close by if you prefer not to walk. Breakfast was very convenient in the mornings, evening meals also available for additional cost and this was also a good option. Room was spacious and clean with generously sized lockers. Very good!
located very close to the old quarter. very nice beds, clean bathrooms, and good breakfast. no self catering service
No air conditioning in the rooms, so if travelling in summer bare this in mind - very hard to cool down! All public transport is free in Luxembourg. Quite family orientated, not a party hostel.
I stayed just one night in the Luxembourg City Hostel. It is a big, modern hostel, nicely located, with good facilities. The two showers for men on the first floor were not very clean and smelling, but I used the showers at -1, which were ok.
The location, the friendly staff, the terrace, the garden, the cafeteria and restaurant are great assets. You can have good food for reasonable prices (Luxemburg is not cheap). Nice breakfast included. Free lockers.
