Hutt Hostel Reviews

Hutt Hostel is run by a friendly and chatty lady who is more than helpful and offers many suggestions on where to go and what to see.

The Location

This hostel is located directly across from the beach in the Mourne Mountains. It is conveniently located around the corner from supermarkets; the central bus station; and the main shopping street, which is lined with cafes, restaurants, shops, and ice cream parlours. The facing street a one-way road, meaning traffic is minimal. This is the only hostel in central Newcastle, however, it is not widely advertised; the locals are happy to point you in the right direction.

Rooms and Bathrooms

The hostel has a maximum occupancy of thirty-five people and can be hired out for larger parties. The rooms are extremely large, and given the time of year you choose to stay, you can have the entire hostel to yourselves. The rooms are clean with doona, pillow, and linen all provided. The dorm rooms, of which there are two, each fit six. On the third floor, there is a larger room called "The Pad," which is great for larger groups, however one small issue is the the doors do not lock and there are no lockers in the rooms, but if you have the hostel to yourself, safety is not an issue. The bathrooms are clean and well maintained with male and female separations with two showers and toilets.

Common Spaces

The front lounge room is warm and cozy, with a fireplace, three couches, and soft carpet. Free breakfast -- consisting of toast, cereals, and milk -- is available every morning; it's basic, but all you need. Free tea and coffee are also available whenever you feel like it. A drying room is available with washer and dryer and the owner is more than happy to show you how to use it.

Summary

Special offers for midweek stays can make staying more affordable for those on a tight budget. The hostel is closed between 10:30 a.m. and 5 p.m. daily, which can be a problem for those with luggage or backpacks they want to unload; bag storage is available for a cost at the tourist information centre for the day if needed. This hostel has recently been refurbished and is very clean; heating throughout the entire building makes for a pleasant stay during the colder times. Hair dryers are available from reception at no cost. During the colder months, the hostel is quiet and not the place for meeting people, but it is homey and comfortable and a beautiful place to stay.

Terrible

The warden was extremely rude and unwelcoming, for a youth hostel it doesn't seem to want the youth. We did get a bit noisy on the first night but no damage was being caused. The owner started screaming and swearing at us calling us children and said she was going to threat us like children. then proceeded to threaten to throw us out telling us to "get out as she had enough." No warning was given, a simple "folks your getting a bit noisy can you keep it down" would have been enough for us to quieten down. next morning we were able to talk to her to let us stay the following night we ensured we didn't make any noise and the next morning when we were eating our breakfast and making lunches she came in bulling about banging things. I offered to help her take out the rubbish and she snapped at me. I've stayed in many hostels all over ireland and scotland and I have never been threatened in such a manner before. We could understand if it was a high quality new hostel and didn't want to get drink spilled but the place is filthy, there is damp in the hall and in the bathrooms, the shower head is disgusting. the shower is either too cold or so hot it burns. Carpet is coming off the stairs which i nearly tripped on. They shouldn't call it a youth hostel if they don't want young people staying there. I wouldn't recommend it to anyone.

Poor

Possibly the worst hostel I have stayed in. The owners lack general manners and slammed the door behind us as we left. General conditions where ok, and the location is good, but just let down by the staff.

Friendly, laid back, excellent kitchen and drying room

This hostel is unpretentious, with a friendly manageress and laid back atmosphere. The basic facilities offer everything needed for a stay, the kitchen and drying rooms being really good. Too many cooks don't spoil the broth in here! The location is very central yet quiet, except for the sound of the sea when the weather is rough!

Very unpleasant staff

myself and 5 friends stayed in the hostel for one night on the 5th of sept 08 and found the lady in charge to be very unpleasant and cheeky. I am in the hospitality trade myself and was very annoyed to see that people are treated like that when we are all tryin to change the face of northern ireland. We were doing a charity walk and would not advise anyone to book in there.

I provisionally booked for one night for two. Turned up to find hostel closed. Rang door bell and a woman answered, she said she didn't have to answer the door, and said if i wanted to come in i would need to go in now. I asked my friend who was in the car what he wanted to do, during which she interrupted me again, i said i was asking him at which point she shut the door on me. We didnt go back because considering this was the first person i had met in Newcastle, she was rather rude. We stayed in a b+b and was made to feel most welcome.

Easy to find. Common areas are maintained, and it's very clean and comfortable. Great breakfast included.
