Fantastic place. We got to the island late (last Ferry). Bus took us to town. Didn't know where we were; someone told us to take a certain bus. Got dropped off at the end of the line and found a phone and an angel to help us call Rita. She had her friend picked us up; they said they were expecting us at 4pm. We really felt stranded until he picked us up. His first words were MAMAMIA! Had a great time here, only wished it had been longer but had to get back to Rome for a wedding. It was rainy the 2 days we were there. Met some neat backpackers. We were there Oct 14, 15, 16 2004.
Rita and her family are some of the most humble, down to earth helpful, loving people I've met. I went down to Marina Piccollo and managed to sting myself with some sort of a sea urchin. Her aunt or her cousin or something spent forty minutes pulling out the 1/8th of an inch stickers out of my knee with tweezers.
The Bussola di Hermes is about the only budget option on Capri but that doesn't mean services and conditions are any less Capri style. Rita and Ciro really take pride in their place, they are fantastically attentive hosts (Ciro even makes the croissants they serve you in the morning!) and the amount of information Rita gives you about things to do on the island is extraordinary.
At the time of this review they are in the middle of renovations, but when it's finished this place will be pretty special. There are garden spaces, rooftop terraces, columns, statues, wine making equipment and more to add to the atmosphere. No room has more than six beds and usually each room has access to a bathroom.
The other travellers were very friendly and there seemed to be a number of repeat visitors also. The only unfortunate thing perhaps is that there is no communal kitchen to use, although I understand that has something to do with the licensing and not that they don't want to accomodate people cooking.
Capri can be expensive so we found this to be a bit pricey, but the cheapest thing on the island for backpackers @ about 27 Euro a bed. I think it could be a bit daunting to find on your own, but the owners have said to call and they will pick you up. We had a beautiful room: no view, but homey. The bathroom was shared and quite clean as well. We were there in the off season and it got cold at night: no heater, but we had plenty of blankets. The owners Cero and Rita were very friendly and welcoming. Breakfast was in a sunny room with the usual roll and coffee, but it was at least heated up for us in the oven. Rita recommended a restaurant where we were able to get a small discount.
I stayed here with two of my friends during the summer of 2004. What a great place! Rita was helpful (still, don't trust her to make reservations in Rome). The hotel was great overall. Capri is worth the trip and this is the only place to stay there. The beer vending machine was cheap, and the rooms were all you could ask for and more.
We actually didn't have a very welcoming experience from Rita during our stay. The hostel itself was fine. It was like its own little resort in Anacapri, but it was pretty expensive compared to other places we had stayed. We had a hard time cancelling our one night reservation, and she gave us the runaround when it came to paying (she made us pay upfront in cash, while others were either allowed to pay upon leaving or by credit card).
The weirdest thing was the morning we were leaving, the cook was handling our checkout, and he didn't know we had already paid. As he was speaking to Rita on the phone, we commented about our experience there, and then the guy literally pushed us out the door, telling us off in Italian! It was really weird and uncalled for.
At any rate, other guests seemed to have a good time and a very different experience. It was a maze to find the place, but it was fairly close to the Blue Grotto by bus. I recommend making Capri a day trip, rather than an overnight experience. The best part about our time there was this great restaurant we found in Anacapri, Il Solitario. It was SO beautiful and peaceful. We had a fantastic dinner at a very good price. The management was very nice, and it was the best part of our stay on the island.
Rita is an excellent hostess! She goes miles out of her way (literally) to welcome you to her beautiful hostel. The office is covered in thank-you letters and postcards inviting Rita and her husband to stay with past guests.
It's tricky to find, but the staff will give you directions up to Anacapri, and then pick you up in the main square. We were told of great bargains, good food, and everything we should see on the island. One of Rita's tips is to swim in the Blue Grotto after hours to save money and to really experience it!
They were undergoing renovation in the summer of 2003 to be bigger and better.
This was truly an amazing place to stay. The owners, Rita and Cristiano, made us feel so welcomed and at home. Rita saved our trip by telling us about the bad nature of the hotel we planned to stay at in Naples and helped up re-route to Sorentto (great city!!!). I would jump at the chance to stay here again! It is the best place to stay in Anacpari, and, unless you are a millionaire, the best place on the island!!
