Fantastic place. We got to the island late (last Ferry). Bus took us to town. Didn't know where we were; someone told us to take a certain bus. Got dropped off at the end of the line and found a phone and an angel to help us call Rita. She had her friend picked us up; they said they were expecting us at 4pm. We really felt stranded until he picked us up. His first words were MAMAMIA! Had a great time here, only wished it had been longer but had to get back to Rome for a wedding. It was rainy the 2 days we were there. Met some neat backpackers. We were there Oct 14, 15, 16 2004.

Rita and her family are some of the most humble, down to earth helpful, loving people I've met. I went down to Marina Piccollo and managed to sting myself with some sort of a sea urchin. Her aunt or her cousin or something spent forty minutes pulling out the 1/8th of an inch stickers out of my knee with tweezers.
The Bussola di Hermes is about the only budget option on Capri but that doesn't mean services and conditions are any less Capri style. Rita and Ciro really take pride in their place, they are fantastically attentive hosts (Ciro even makes the croissants they serve you in the morning!) and the amount of information Rita gives you about things to do on the island is extraordinary.
At the time of this review they are in the middle of renovations, but when it's finished this place will be pretty special. There are garden spaces, rooftop terraces, columns, statues, wine making equipment and more to add to the atmosphere. No room has more than six beds and usually each room has access to a bathroom.
The other travellers were very friendly and there seemed to be a number of repeat visitors also. The only unfortunate thing perhaps is that there is no communal kitchen to use, although I understand that has something to do with the licensing and not that they don't want to accomodate people cooking.
Capri can be expensive so we found this to be a bit pricey, but the cheapest thing on the island for backpackers @ about 27 Euro a bed. I think it could be a bit daunting to find on your own, but the owners have said to call and they will pick you up. We had a beautiful room: no view, but homey. The bathroom was shared and quite clean as well. We were there in the off season and it got cold at night: no heater, but we had plenty of blankets. The owners Cero and Rita were very friendly and welcoming. Breakfast was in a sunny room with the usual roll and coffee, but it was at least heated up for us in the oven. Rita recommended a restaurant where we were able to get a small discount.
I stayed here with two of my friends during the summer of 2004. What a great place! Rita was helpful (still, don't trust her to make reservations in Rome). The hotel was great overall. Capri is worth the trip and this is the only place to stay there. The beer vending machine was cheap, and the rooms were all you could ask for and more.
We actually didn't have a very welcoming experience from Rita during our stay. The hostel itself was fine. It was like its own little resort in Anacapri, but it was pretty expensive compared to other places we had stayed. We had a hard time cancelling our one night reservation, and she gave us the runaround when it came to paying (she made us pay upfront in cash, while others were either allowed to pay upon leaving or by credit card).
The weirdest thing was the morning we were leaving, the cook was handling our checkout, and he didn't know we had already paid. As he was speaking to Rita on the phone, we commented about our experience there, and then the guy literally pushed us out the door, telling us off in Italian! It was really weird and uncalled for.
At any rate, other guests seemed to have a good time and a very different experience. It was a maze to find the place, but it was fairly close to the Blue Grotto by bus. I recommend making Capri a day trip, rather than an overnight experience. The best part about our time there was this great restaurant we found in Anacapri, Il Solitario. It was SO beautiful and peaceful. We had a fantastic dinner at a very good price. The management was very nice, and it was the best part of our stay on the island.
Rita is an excellent hostess! She goes miles out of her way (literally) to welcome you to her beautiful hostel. The office is covered in thank-you letters and postcards inviting Rita and her husband to stay with past guests.
It's tricky to find, but the staff will give you directions up to Anacapri, and then pick you up in the main square. We were told of great bargains, good food, and everything we should see on the island. One of Rita's tips is to swim in the Blue Grotto after hours to save money and to really experience it!
They were undergoing renovation in the summer of 2003 to be bigger and better.
This was truly an amazing place to stay. The owners, Rita and Cristiano, made us feel so welcomed and at home. Rita saved our trip by telling us about the bad nature of the hotel we planned to stay at in Naples and helped up re-route to Sorentto (great city!!!). I would jump at the chance to stay here again! It is the best place to stay in Anacpari, and, unless you are a millionaire, the best place on the island!!
Hotel Bussola Reviews from the Web
I loved my stay!
The hotel has a fantastic location & the staff is amazing!
Highly recommended by me!
This hotel is a jewel on the island. The staffs were friendly and helpful. The breakfast was excellent. Will stay again.
Liked: Clean. Disliked: Did not accept Credit Cards. Also, there wasn't really a secure room to leave our luggage. Directions to places weren't very clear. No 24 hour reception.
Liked: hostel booker Disliked: a little far from things but the excellent staff make up for it!
Liked: Hospitality of the hotel staff and the cleanliness of the room. The lady receptionist was very helpful in explaining all tourist attractions to us. We were also offered a drop-off at the bus stop with our luggage after check-out. Disliked: The hotel is quite inside the main street so had we not taken a taxi; it would have been very difficult reaching there at night, as the bus from Marina Grande to Anacapri is not frequent after 20:15
It would have been nice to have the air-conditioner included in the hotel reservation (there is no fan in the room). This was charged 10 euro extra per nght.
Liked: It's very peaceful, well away from the noise of tourist Capri. The air-conditioning is great too! - although you need to be aware it costs extra, it's not included in the price of your stay. I loved the beautiful blue ceramic floors and the decor generally; only in Italy! There's a lovely roof terrace where you can watch the sunset. I thought it was excellent value for money. Disliked: I didn't dislike anything - but for anyone who doesn't like walking as much as me perhaps it's worth pointing out that it's a good ten minutes uphill - through enchanting narrow lanes full of bougainvillea and oleanders - into the centre of Anacapri or to the nearest bus stop. But you have to walk a lot anywhere on Capri, most of the roads are too narrow for anything except scooters and Api.
Liked: helpful and kind staff, location, atmosphere Disliked: nothing
Liked: Very lovely staff more than willing to help! 10 minute walk to bus stops which have frequent buses to take you to the town centre. Disliked: 1
Liked: Very friendly and helpful staff. The view of the sunset from the hotel roof balcony is wonderful. Local shops and restaurants nearby. Disliked: The hotel is a long ways from the beach by stair or windy road.
Liked: Great staff. Very helpful and warm. Always happy. Room was very clean and had everything I needed. Breakfast was light but had unlimited juice and cappucino. Disliked: Location is good if you plan to do things around Anacapri. But it is a hike to the bus stop to get to Capri. Other than that nothing.
Liked: Great place to stay for travellers on a budget. Situated in Anacapri, it's a much nicer atmosphere and more tranquil than the crowded streets of Capri. A short walk into Anacapri. The staff were incredibly helpful and friendly. Owned by a brother and sister who are incredibly passionate about the hotel and the developments that they are doing. Disliked: I think the breakfast was a little on the small side, one coffee and one baguette.
Liked: Located in quiet and peaceful neighbourhood of Anacapri. Helpful staff. Disliked: They charged additional for use of air-conditioning!
Liked: Very friendly and helpful staff, Rita was absolutely lovely and so were everyone else. Hotel was definitely value for money, very clean and comfortable and very nicely done up. Fresh towels and rooms cleaned every day. It is a family run place so it's very cosy and warm. Nice terrace on the roof top to chill out/sunbathe. Decent breakfast of coffee/tea, croissant and bread - not much variety but enough to fill you up. Disliked: A bit of a walk to Anacapri town and bus stops. It's about a ten minutes uphill walk to get to restaurants/cafes/banks, but it's not extremely tiring or strenuous.
Liked: The three staff members were wonderful and attentive. Allowed us to treat the hotel as we would our own home. Very, very friendly people. Disliked: No problems.
Liked: The staff were helpful, and were always willing to help. We were supposed to take a boat tour, but the woman running it (forgive me, I forget her name) said we were paying to much and told us we could get cheaper. She totally covered for us when the tour company called several times asking for us, very sweet of her! Disliked: Location was out of the way, but it was cheaper than the rest and the walk wasn't that bad. The bus also drops you off closer, but we would get off a stop earlier to work off the pizza and gelato ;)
Breakfast could have been better. I know Europe likes big buffets for breakfast, but they only had bread, coffee, tea, cappuccino and juice. Not the best if you are hikingthe islands paths all day.
Liked: The hotel is very beautiful, the owner really nice and helpful. Disliked: nothing
Liked: The attention was excellent! the room is very big and comfortable. Disliked: Nothing to complain. Wifi was prepaid but we use the 3 hours of limit

Liked: Very glad we chose to stay at this place. Being one of only two guests during the "off peak" season, we literally had the whole place to ourselves. Best of all was the breathtaking view of the sea and mainland from our balcony. This is an ideal place to relax and get away from it all in a quiet, countryside setting. Yes, you need to walk a bit from the bus stop in Anacapri, but the walk through the rustic village is well worth it.
Once orientated, it's actually pretty convenient for Anacapri, Blue Grotto and the bus to Capri. Rita was fantastic and recommended our visit itinerary for us. Highly recommended Disliked: no complaints, really enjoyed ourselves.
The only comment i would make is that the payment was cash only, and I noticed the hotel overview suggested that credit cards were accepted.

Liked: Clean, nice rooms. Great price for Capri and very cenral for Ana Capri Disliked: Nothing
