Biohostal Mindo Cloud Forest Reserve Reviews

Biohostal Mindo Cloud Forest Reserve is a quiet hostel and an adequate place to stay; it's located in Mindo, a tiny village nestled among pristine cloud forests in northwestern Ecuador whose relatively recent growth has been spurred by tourism. The streets house a multitude of accommodations of all prices, restaurants, tour operators, and a few bars with a small nightlife. It's busy on weekends with locals from nearby Quito and surroundings and international visitors, holds a definite charm, and is well worth visiting.

The Location

This area offers bird watching, trails for hiking, and a few extreme-river-related sports. Buses to Mindo leave from Ofelia Terminal in Quito; it’s a two-hour ride. The Biohostal is two blocks away from the last bus stop, in the village park. The street is a quiet, dirt road on the outer fringes of the village.

The hostel's large, concrete, three-floor building feels like a rustic country house. The ground floor hosts the reception, kitchen, and indoor and outdoor common areas; rooms and more common areas are found on the second and third floors. Most of the common areas have open spaces, and the hostel is, therefore, well ventilated and illuminated in the daytime. Both rooms and common areas are quite spacious and it can accommodate all the guests with room to spare.

The owners have added to and remodeled all through the hostel, so it feels a bit makeshift and in the works. The furnishings are rustic and the furniture has generally seen much wear and tear in its life.

Rooms and Bathrooms

All rooms include bathrooms. The hostel, which caters to guests seeking private rooms, has fifteen private rooms and two shared dorms. One of these is mixed, and the other is women-only. The mixed dorm has two double-bed bunks and two single beds. Towels, soap, and shampoo are provided for each guest. The room has large, backpack-size lockers and plenty of power points distributed throughout. Oddly, one bunk has night lights for each bed and a general night light is provided for the rest.

Due to the surrounding nature areas and the prevailing climate, bugs are abundant. Unfortunately, much-needed bug nets aren’t included with the beds, a common practice in Mindo.

The shower is in in an old tub (with anti-slip mat); it needs thorough cleaning urgently. Without the mat, the tub is quite slippery and caution is advised. Pressure is low and water above lukewarm. The bathroom has hooks, a large mirror, and a plug-in. Shared toilets are located next to the reception and are separated by gender. These toilets are basically clean.

Common Spaces

Common areas are large and well ventilated. Most have at least one open side to the outdoors. Both rooms and common areas are decorated with bird-watching and nature motifs, and are rustic, yet cheery and comfortable. There’s a small room on the roof with a hammock, a table for two, and a beautiful view; it's a good place to chill. At the back of the ground floor, more hammocks are available and smoking is allowed. In general, the illumination in the hostel at night is quite dim. The kitchen is spacious and well equipped, but you should be aware that during the morning hours, the staff use it for preparing breakfast, and it is virtually out of bounds.

The hostel staff do not speak English and communications can be tricky for non-Spanish speakers. During our stay, we got charged without the benefit of the amount paid online for the booking. This seems to be a common practice. Though breakfast is advertised as free, it is available only for a few dollars.
