Penthouse Backpackers Reviews

Cosy, convenient, roof terrace

A short walk from the station, and a short walk to the centre. Intimate hostel with a generous sized kitchen. Being on the top floor reduces the noise from the busy road below. The roof terrace is the best part of the hostel, but is unfortunately a place where smoking is permitted. Ban smoking on the terrace, and I will give the location five stars.

To enter Penthouse Backpackers -- the only hostel of Osnabrck -- you need to climb some stairs. But it's absolutely worth it. On the top of an old building, you can enjoy the view over the city of Osnabrck, while having a beer or a barbecue with other guests.

The Location

The hostel is directly in the city center and just a five-minute walk from the main station. To the main shopping street and the central bus terminal, it's just another five-minute walk. The post office, ATMs, supermarkets, Asian food stores, and fast-food stores (kebab, pizza) are directly around the corner. For any needs during the night you can go to a small twenty-four/seven store at the train station.

As there are no numbers on the houses, you need to search a little bit for the right house, but the yellow sign of the hostel is quite obvious. The entrance is in a small backyard next to the parking. There are just two parking spaces for the hostel itself, but the staff showed us another free parking area just three minutes away from the hostel.

Rooms and Bathrooms

All in all, there are around thirty-five beds in the hostel. There are different kind of dorms (eight- and ten-bed dorms, and two four-bed dorms). Moreover there are a couple of private twins, including two twin en suites. All the dorms are clean, bright, really cozy, and well-furnished, so that every guest has enough space for his or her own backpack and luggage. There are lockers for every single guest, directly next to his bed. Furthermore, every bed has its own bedside lamp. Some dorms are with bunk beds, but thanks to the well-equipped rooms, you will find enough privacy, even in the ten-bed dorm. To lock the doors, every single guest will get his own key. It's like the classic backpacker rule -- the last one locks the door.

There are two twin en suites with their own bathroom. Two of the dorms have their own washbasins. The rest of the the dorms and twins have to use the common bathrooms. They're in the middle of the hostel, so they're easy to reach. The bathrooms are big, clean, and you have nice shelves for the clothes and enough space to change your dress in the showers. There are gender-segregated bathrooms, both the same size and with enough toilets, showers, and washbasins for all the guests.

Common Spaces

One of the big pluses is the common areas. The huge and sensationally equipped kitchen helps you to find friends and people who may join you for cooking. Next to the kitchen, there's a big living room with a book exchange and many board games and a TV. The living room has good tables for people who need to work and it's really well furnished. Especially when the sun is shining, all the guests are on the incredible, huge roof terrace -- this is where the hostel life takes place most of the time. BBQs, little paddle pools, and great sitting areas makes it easy to get to know new people for a beer. It's not a party hostel but a cozy place where you will easily find other travelers. There's no real luggage store, but the staff can put your luggage in the office if you're leaving in the afternoon or evening.

Thanks to its sensational location between the city center and the main station, the great socializing areas and the cozy rooms, Penthouse Backpackers makes your stay very comfortable, and you will definitely miss it after your departure. It's not a party hostel, but the right place for hanging around with new interesting people.

Fine atmosphere, terrible beds

the hostel gave me the impression of a students' house as it should be. Everything was available to cook your meals and spend time with friends. However, the beds were in one word horrible. The mattresses were extremely thin and uncomfortable. I had three days of muscle ache after sleeping there -- because of the beds we will not come back.

Well kept and run. Staff nearly always on hand to answer questions.

Great place. Professionally run by the gorgeous owner. I recommend it to anyone passing through the town. It fulfilled all my expectations of how a hostel should be run.

excellent hostel! staff are extremely helpful and friendly. very clean and a relaxed atmosphere. lots of information about hostels around the world which was very useful and free internet! beds are comfortable and this hostel has everything you need! definitely recommend it.

Really good accommodations... very central! Fabulously equipped kitchen; the individual baskets are a great idea!!! Staff were great and very, very helpful! Our only gripe is that the showers and toilets could have been a little more modern!

I've lived there almost six (!) weeks so I can rate this hotel with the best mark, "excellent." And I can recommend it very much because there were never any problems. The whole time I enjoyed the nice and friendly atmosphere. It is situated very close to the city center, with its pedestrian zone and lots of pubs. It's a very good home base to discover a lively city and surroundings.

I loved this hostel. It is very clean and friendly, very homely, and in the middle of the city. The city is nice. I've been there, and it was fun. I loved the pubs and the guys, so I'll come back. Thanks for the nice days--a big kiss for the friendly staff.

Very cozy, felt like living in someones home. Has a kitchen and fridge and they dont charge extra for breakfast (bread and cereals). Showers couldnt be locked and drapes had a window at chest level so you would flash anyone who walked in

Nice hostel, well located with good facilities. Very quiet with not a lot happening

Had a fine stay. Not much going on in the hostel, bathrooms do smell a bit. But nice to stay at an independent hostel rather than a chain- the kitchen and breakfast was very good

Everything is for sale, you have to pay for towels for example, I have stayed in many hostels around the world and towels always are part of the package.

Toilets and showers are dirty and smell bad.

Sehr gastfreundlich und die Qualitt des Hotels war super fr den Preis.

A lovely and homely place to stay. Unique and colourful, unpretentious and thoughtful decor. Very clean (though there were few people staying at this time.) Cathy was a very kind and professional host.

Only cons were the bed being very squeaky and not being sure how to turn the radiator down, otherwise a really special place.

Organised, clean, heart-ful. And vegan milk for breakfast woohoo!

Note there is no lift in the building.

Great place to stay in Osnabruck. Good location, close to the train station, buses, restaurants, and a short walk from the museum quarter and university campus. The room was one of my favorite I've stayed in, the cool decor and comfortable bed made it the perfect place to relax for a few days.

I spent three weeks here when looking for more permanent accommodation in Osnabrck. It was perfect as a base, near enough to most places to walk and great connectivity if needing to take public transport. Kathy was wonderful and so helpful throughout my entire stay, making me feel welcome and at home away from home. My only two critiques could be for the WiFi and the communal showers (the stairs nearly killed me on occasion but that information was available before booking!). Overall grand spot

Great service provided. Good customer service and responsiveness to all needs. Great location, close to lots of stores and hospital.

It was an nice stay in Osnabrck, although the on the way to the hostel one had to pass a long way over a repellent stair way to the 3rd floor.

The hostel itsself was nice, bathrooms werde very momelike but unfortunaltely showers were nonepractical. Water falls from a high point, so its absolutely necessary to take a shower cap with you if you want to take a shower without washing your hair.

The breakfast was scarce. The hostel is located on the 3rd/4th floor, there is no elevator and if you have a big laguage it is very difficult to bring it upstairs.

But it's clean and there is a balcony for smokers :) We enjoyed it very much.

Thanks a lot for my good time in Osnabrck ;)

Great Hostel - forsure will visit it next time when in Osnabruck

It's really close to the station, the staff is very helpful (Cathrin, you are great), the breakfast is free, internet is free, there are lockers in the room, there is a guitar and books.
