City Walls Hostel Reviews

Great place to stay!

The hostel itself is very clean and well kept. The owner John is a very cool guy [he is from Vancouver] and we even ran into him at the bar and shared some beers. Great atmosphere and location. I almost forgot, Ivo is a legend!

Fresh Sheets Hostel is the only hostel within the walls of Dubrovnik's Old Town and is professionally run by friendly Canadians and their local staff.

The Location

The hostel is the best located in the city for sightseeing as most of Dubrovnik's attractions lie within the Old Town. It is not, however, the most convenient either for the bus station/port or the beach (for a beach holiday it would perhaps be better to consider a hostel in the Lapad area). If arriving by bus from the airport or elsewhere it is necessary to transfer to another local bus (very frequent) to Pile Gate and then it's a good ten- to fifteen-minute walk through the entirely pedestrianised Old Town. This walk includes climbing some steep steps but the hostel can provide excellent directions and the journey takes in some of the key sights of the city.

Rooms and Bathrooms

The dorm rooms have single beds, provided with extra blankets in cold weather. The room at the very top of the building (named 'Heaven') suffers a great deal of exposure and as such is the coldest and noisiest (from the howling winds coming off the sea) of the rooms so if possible try to get into one of the lower rooms. Rooms are very comfortable and have a combined toilet/shower, which is small but contains all the standard amenities such as towel rack and toiletries storage. All rooms and bathrooms are clean and tidy.

Common Spaces

There is a small common seating area downstairs next to reception with the adjoining kitchen area right in front of the reception desk. These areas are rather small for the hostel's capacity and can get a bit busy but are well equipped and clean. There is also a computer in the corner with free internet access and a small selection of travel books should guests need further information on the local area. The facilities at Fresh Sheets, though small, are head and shoulders above the rest in Dubrovnik's hostel and budget guesthouse range. Fellow guests appear friendly and amicable, and any time spent in the social areas is likely to result in new acquaintances.

Fresh Sheets is overall a good hostel, providing the more familiar hostel model with typical amenities in a city whose budget accommodation market is largely dominated by the private rooms and spartan guesthouse sector.

Absolutely awesome!

This place has got absolutely everything. The best staff I ever met -- make you feel just like home (you guys are great). Sparklingly clean, comfy facilities and common area. In the very heart of the old town. En-suite bathrooms. Breakfast included. Totally operational kitchen. Free internet. Need I say more? The only excuse you might got not to come here if you are in Dubrovnik is that it is already booked up. In any other case, you are making a huge mistake not staying here. Honest. This is a review written by a guy that has backpacked in central europe for one month a year the last eight years. you are not going to find many places like this anywhere from Estonia to Croatia.

City Walls Hostel Reviews from the Web

Only leaving a review because Anja told me she would kick me out if I didnt

10/10 would stay here again, everything was great. Good thing there are security cameras!

Steps to the hostel are a lot, in a great area though. One of the receptionists was very unfriendly and unprofessional. Bed was a bit uncomfortable and atmosphere wasn't amazing. Good air con though.

No frills hostel, breakfast could be better and lacked electrical plugs. It was relatively clean and AC worked well for a good nights sleep though. Receptionist was nice as well.

Had only 1 night in the hostel, but it was pretty close to perfect! I was warned how busy and overwhelming the old city of Dubrovnik would be in the summer, but the hostel is located in a quiet and serene street right near the city walls. Very friendly local staff who explained the local area with a map and gave recommendations for food and activities. Happily kept my luggage before and after check in while I explored. A bit more pricey than some other hostels, but worth it for the location!

Enjoyed my stay here! It was incredibly nice not to have bunk beds for once! The lockers were big (you do need your own lock). Not very social, but quiet, clean, and staff is great. Its not in the center of the old town, so if thats your preference you may want to look elsewhere. Also beware there are lots of steps to get here!

The staff were very friendly! Nikolina was so welcoming and helped me find anywhere I needed. They had great suggestions for things to do and a great insight into Dubrovnik. The rooms and bathrooms were very clean with a good shower, good comfy beds. Have to walk up a few steps to get to the hostel but its right in the old town so location is perfect!!

This hostel was great, perfect location and so clean! The staff were lovely and accommodating and the views from my hostel window couldnt be beat. It wasnt very lively when I was there, so if youre a solo traveler looking to party Im not sure its your vibe, but I loved my stay!

Located in a quite residential area, with silent hours after 10:00 pm, fit me perfectly. The hostel was social enough to meet fellow travelers. That the oldtown itself is quite small, and it is easy to get to the restaurants/bars/attractions.

The hosts were amazing too. Thoroughly recommended.

If you visit Dubrovnik, I def. recommend guided Kayaking, and visiting multiple beaches on the mainland & Lokrum (in addition to the standard tourist stuff in the oldtown)

I had a great stay at this hostel! Facilities were the cleanest I have ever seen a hostel. Beds were comfortable and rooms where a good size. It is a small hostel which I enjoyed but I wish there were more common spaces to meet people. I mainly met the people staying in my room or met people in the kitchen. Staff were very friendly! Location was fantastic.

above and beyond my favourite stay of all time. spotlessly clean, lovely rooms and social area, great staff - anja is an absolute firecracker, shes just fantastic! met some great people and made some great memories. the steps to get there are worth it a thousand times over!

What a great hostel! I highly recommend the bar crawl as well, not sure what it's called but the hostel recommended it and we met a lot of great people. They come to clean the bathrooms every day which was amazing. A little info though, the private room is behind a room and bathroom in the top floor so that was a bit weird, we had to go through them to get to our room. It was only noticeable when the people from the other room were making noise in the bathroom while we were sleeping.

The receptionists are sweethearts and they do their best to help you. I felt safe and comfortable in this hostel. Emphasis was put on cleaning and it truly was one of the cleanest hostels I've been to. It is a rather quiet hostel and I was able to sleep very well. Maybe it's not the best location to be if you're carrying very heavy luggage because of the stairs but that has more to do with the geography of Dubrovnik and not with the location of the hostel.

Location was inside the old town and the security lockers were good but I had an EXTREMELY squeaky and loud bed, uncomfortable mattress and the staff were at times rude. I was kicked out of my room for 2 hours during cleaning time and told I was unable to go upstairs to even get some essentials for my day. It did not have a very social atmosphere and I met more people at local bars than in the hostel.

Very pleasant place to stay but so many steps to get to it. Staff really friendly and helpful. Very little atmosphere

Overall had one of my best hostel experiences at city walls- many thanks to Anya, Nikolina and Andrea! They provided some great tips of where to go and check out, created a very open atmosphere and encouraged us travellers to do things together. The hostel and rooms are clean and the beds comfy, with ample charging ports. Incredible location within the city walls and not too far from a cliff jump. Only thing that bugged me was the hefty price tag (and I booked in advance), however it proved to be an experie

Anja was fantastic! The space was amazing and easy to meet people in. The staff were super accommodating.

A little expensive, but it is a really great location. Clean room and helpful staff.

Fantastic stay - Dubrovnik was beautiful and couldn't have been happier with City Walls Hostel. The staff were all absolutely fantastic, friendly & helpful when we arrived recommending us places to go etc. The hostel location is right inside Old Town which means it's less than a 10 minute walk to almost everywhere you'd want to visit during your stay. Highly recommend both Dubrovnik & this hostel.

Great hostel. Really fun staff, nice and clean rooms and in an amazing location right beside Buza beach/bar. It's also not in the middle of the busy bar area which makes it quiet at night. Would definitely stay again.

Long way up the stairs to get to this property but it was all I needed for a few nights inside the walls. Very close to the buza bar which was great. There wasn't really much of an atmosphere as people weren't socializing inside.

Location and Contact

• Once you have entered 'Pile Gate' (the main entrance to Dubrovnik's Old Town), it's about a ten minute walk to City Walls Hostel.
• • (1) Head straight down the main street 'Placa' (Stradun) towards the Clock Tower. One block before the Clock Tower, turn right (just after a large cafe called 'Cele' with alfresco seating). If you pass the statue of Orlando in front of St. Blaise's Church, you've gone too far. (@ 2-5 minutes)
• • (2) Walk straight. If you arrive in the morning, you will pass old ladies selling fruits and vegetables in Gundulic Square. During the evening, Gundulic Square is filled with dining tables. Continue past the square and up the rather daunting steps leading to the Jesuit Monastery. (@ 3 minutes)
• • (3) Once you have climbed the 'Spanish Steps', you will notice the Jesuit Monastery to your right. Next to the Church is the baroque building of the former Collegium of Dubrovnik. Now walk left through the gravel courtyard until you see a wooden sign that reads 'Cold Drinks With Most Beautiful View'. (@ 30s)
• • (4) Turn right at the sign towards the cliff-side cafe bar 'Cold Drinks' (Buza). This will take you along a path and gradual steps that follow the outer sea wall. Once you see the next 'Cold Drinks' sign, you are almost at City Walls Hostel (@ 3 minutes).
• • (5) Continue walking straight past two small alleys. Look above and you will sea City Walls Hostel lamp with our logo! City Walls is the tall corner building located on your right-hand side. It is a four-story building . (@ 1 minute)
• • (6) Welcome to City Walls Hostel!!!
• • Looking forward to your stay!
