Lollis Homestay occupies a large, four-story, turn-of-the-twentieth-century building in the Neustadt area of the city, which survived the firestorm destruction of World War II. Neustadt is, paradoxically, the historic old city, and Gorlitzer Strasse is in the heart of what is now a cool, trendy, gay-friendly, lively area of Dresden with many bars and beer gardens within minutes. The hostel exemplifies this with off-the-wall lighting and decor throughout, whilst being exceptionally well run. Although it includes the word Homestay in its full title, its important to understand that this is definitely a backpacker-style hostel; you will not be staying in someones home!
The Location
It's a fifteen-minute walk from Dresden Neustadt train station, via Bautzner Strasse and Rothenburger Strasse, or take tram No. Eleven in direction Bhlau for two stops before changing to Tram No. Thirteen in the direction "Mickten" and once again travel just two stops as far as the tram-stop "Alaunplatz. Then walk back along the tram-line, which runs directly along Gorlitzer Strasse, for a hundred meters.
From the main train station (Hauptbahnhof) take tram No. Seven, direction "Weixdorf," as far as the stop "Bischofsweg." Turn right onto Bischofsweg and continue along for about four hundred meters. Take the third street to the right, and you will find Lollis after a hundred meters. It is a seven-minute walk to the transport hub at Alexanderplatz.
Rooms and Bathrooms
The dorms are quirky with unique dcor; fascinating, hand-crafted pendant lamps; and walls carefully papered with advertising posters and magazine pages, or hand painted in soft pastel colours with loopy patterns. They are spacious and often include a small desk, chairs, and a side table or two. The windows are standard tilt and turn double-glazed units which exclude drafts well. There is ample space between bunks to dress and change; the rooms have high ceilings; and the feel is arty, funky and cool. Sturdy, secure lockers are inside the rooms with padlocks provided as part of your key issue. The two berth wooden bunks employ pre-tensioned convex wooden slats for excellent mattress support, and each has a bunk light, an individual power socket, and a small shelf. A nice touch is the issue, on arrival, of an A4 laminated card, which you use to indicate that you have taken a particular bunk. Mattresses are comfortable, and bedding clean and soft. Duvets ensure a warm nights sleep. Bathroom facilities consisting of showers, toilets, and wash hand basins are down the corridor. Showers are clean and hot; towels are provided free. It is true that one room (on the third floor) contains a Trabant motor car!
Common Spaces
Reception is permanently staffed at busy periods in the year, but should it be unmanned, your electronic key fob gives front door access. Just through an arch are located benches, tables, and chairs, and a cosy corner with armchairs; a mezzanine deck provides further armchair seating and is nominated as the preferred area for internet access. Free tea and coffee are available at all times, and the kitchen, located through another arch, has a guest fridge, cooking facilities, and a sink; cupboards for food storage; recycling containers; and a microwave. The space has been ingeniously designed to provide seating for breakfast atop and alongside stowage for luggage, board games, lighting, and pieces of artwork. Breakfast is available for those who wish, and is standard continental fare at a reasonable cost. Leaflets on many local attractions and a huge variety of other hostels across Europe are in the entrance lobby. There is free Wi-Fi throughout, and a laptop or two available to borrow for free; signal strength and download speeds are good. The hostel provides free bicycles for guests use. Other parts of Dresden are readily accessible by tram or bus; it is an easy city to navigate.
Summary
Lollis is uniquely cool in atmosphere and decor, run by a crew of very friendly and helpful staff, and is extremely well managed. It displays a rich vein of interesting architecture in an area of Dresden special for its heritage, and attracts a wide variety of couples and singles keen to participate in the Dresden vibe. It tries hard -- and succeeds -- at being a comfortable, welcoming, and trendy hostel.
Staff are more than excellent.
Mattress is foam but on firm support and you do get a good night sleep. Located in a quiet neighborhood but with many restaurants nearby. City tram is just couple city blocks away and I actually walked from hostel to the old town, and old town to main train station there and back. Great location.
Good service and good condition
every thing is good. free wifi, hot water. a girl receptionist was so cute. we tried to talk in German, although I can speak only a little.
Very nice hostel
Staff were great, breakfast was good, and rooms were comfortable. Didn't get five stars only because it was a little distant from the Old Town and the storage lockers were a bit small.
Better than house
better than a house, every floor every room are different, the staff easy and very helpfully, the position is in the best part of the city, without any doubts is one of the best hostel I have been.
Good atmosphere, nice people
I've been to Lolli's for the second time and i do really like it. you can meet people from all over the world and listen their stories. the workers at Lollis always trying to help you with any problem you have, like mine was, to find a flat. i am really grateful to stay here. so just try it out, because if you'd go to an hilton hotel, you'd miss out a lot.
Simply the best
what to say more -- great location and a feeling like home. thanks for the stay, I will be back.
Don't be misled by the name -- Lollis Homestay does not fit the homestay category, but is simply a hostel. They do have perks -- laundry service, free use of bikes, and they serve breakfast for an additional fee.
This unique hostel is great for the traveler looking for an inexpensive stop for the night. Each dorm room in the hostel is decorated to the nines with varying themes. Their common areas are rather small and while the bathroom in our area was spacious, it only accommodated one person at a time. More communal bathrooms are available on lower floors. The facilities are well maintained and clean and the kitchen is stocked with more cooking equipment than its four burners could accommodate in one evening.
The small common areas and no TV mean that the social atmosphere is limited. The lounge seems to be the smoking area of the building which for this non-smoker was turn-off. Smoking is not allowed in rooms. Young and old alike could be found under this roof.
Lollis is located in an area of town full of coffee shops and bars and is a reasonable walk from the new train station (not the Main station -- need public transit from there). There is also a great park one block away that is a great place to take your dinner and hang out for the evening.
