Jugendherberge Hamburg Auf dem Stintfang

The Hostelz.com Review

Youth Hostel Hamburg - Auf dem Stintfang is close to a subway stop and caters to families. The hostel is large but the only common room available is the dining room or the guest kitchen in the basement with no windows.

The Location

This hostel is a ten-minute walk from a subway stop and four stops on the subway from the main train station. If taking the subway, a short trip ticket is sufficient and saves you money.

Rooms and Bathrooms

The dorm rooms have electronic locks with a key card and in-room lockers large enough for small luggage. There is a varying number of beds available in a room and all beds are bunk beds. Private rooms are available but they are also only bunk beds. Every room has its own bathroom with a shower stall, toilet, and sink. The bathrooms are tiny, with no changing room available and no shelf space inside or outside the shower.

Common Spaces

The main common space is the large dining area on the ground floor. It has huge windows that overlook the harbor along with a small outside dining area. Also in the dining area is a pool table and an overlarge chess set. Breakfast is free and is served off of the dining area. When open, there is a bar off of the dining area but it's not large enough for more than ten people.

In the basement is a guest kitchen and a ping pong table. The guest kitchen is large but not very well equipped. As far as dishes and pots and pans go, there is only enough for four people to cook and eat at the same time, but the kitchen is not used very often by other guests. The ping pong tables are set up in a room with no windows and no decorations and is not very nice to be in. There is no book exchange or common computers.

Most of the guests staying at the hostel will be families with lots of kids ranging in ages. There is not a lot of socialization between guests that didn't previously know each other, but the kids all seem to get along.

This hostel is large and caters to families as guests. There is no common area to hang out in other than the dining area, which is open all day until 11 p.m. The bar is only open in the evening and not at all on Sundays. Breakfast is free and has more selections than usual for free hostel breakfasts.

Comfortable and organized
It was a very comfortable place to stay. There aren't enough restrooms on the 2nd floor. I stayed in two different rooms and in both the other people in my room went to bed very early and woke very early in the morning (6am?). The rules about check-in (reservation is cancelled at 5pm) if you haven't checked in are a bit frustrating.

Nice View, but unfriendly stuff
This might be the Youth Hostel with the best view in germany! But the staff knows the fact and acts this way. I was checked-in in a high price room even I booked the cheap dorm. The front desk stuff didn't like my complain and told me, "Your new room has about 50 degrees Celsius, but now you have to take it." The room wasn't this hot and had only two more beds the the one I had before (about 5 Euro difference). Anyway, I did not have any contact with that person afterwards, so my stay was very fun!
Amazing view!
Very nice and clean hostel. Amazing view of the biggest port in Europe! Easy to get to, very close to S-Bahn station. The downside is the noise, because they have school/classes there on a trip, but the noise usually stops around 9 p.m. Overall good impression, would definitively recommend!
Nice location near waterfront and a metro station. Clean and spacious dorms with lockers.

The hostel is absolutely great. This side shows old photos. The hostel has a big reception area with a video wall. All rooms are en-suite rooms. This is by far one of the best hostels in Germany! We stayed in a double room with a great harbour view.

An HI hostel with a great view over the Elbe River and walking distance from the Reeperbahn red-light district; featuring clubs, bars, shows, theatres, cabarets, and a casino. The hostel offers a bar and three eating rooms including a balcony. Everything seems to be exceptionally clean, and the primary guests appear to be school children from around the region.
There are loads and loads of families staying here, so it's not great if you'd like to meet young backpackers. The woman who works at reception is a bit of a bulldog, very strict. Otherwise it was very clean and the breakfast was good, but it's in a bit of a quiet area.

This place has first class fellow travelers, and hoops fans if you ever play in this neck of the woods book in here. It's 10 minutes from Reeperbahn/St. Pauli and the football stadium. The best!
