Hostelz.com's Review
Sheep Island View Hostel is a charming place to stay in a convenient location in the village of Ballintoy on the Antrim Coast. The staff is local, down-to-earth, and friendly. The facilities are comfortable and clean.

The Location

Sheep Island View Hostel is in a convenient location for visiting the Giant's Causeway and the Carrick-A-Rede Rope Bridge. It is located in the little village of Ballintoy, which has few pubs and little shops all within walking distance of the hostel. For more action, the towns of Ballycastle, Bushmills, and even Portrush are a short drive away.

The hostel offers free parking as well as a free pick-up service which covers the towns of Ballycastle, Portrush, Bushmills, and the Giant's Causeway. This area of the Antrim coast has good public transportation with shuttle bus service between the Giant's Causeway and Carrick-a-Rede rope bridge during the summer months.

Rooms and Bathrooms

There are sleeping facilities for up to a hundred and ten guests, in a variety of room types -- twin private and three-, four-, and six-bed rooms, many with ensuite bathrooms. The facilities are well maintained, clean, and comfortable. Linens are provided, towels are available for hire. There are cupboards for belongings in the bedroom and a shelf in the bathrooms. The water pressure needs improvement and a few hooks would also be handy.

Common Spaces

There is a large living area with a TV, fireplace, and lots of chairs. The kitchen is fantastic, with four cooking areas arranged around a large island. There are two large sinks, plenty of counter space, a couple refrigerators, ovens, toasters, and coffee maker. The kitchen is well equipped with everything you need to make it pleasant to cook and self-cater meals. The large room has several large tables and lots of seating. Coffee, tea, and sugar are provided.

The staff are available and helpful. There is free Wi-Fi. There is no curfew. The hostel will either be quiet or lively depending on the guests at the time, since it is a comfortable place with plenty of common space. Sheep Island View Hostel attracts a mix of age groups, families, and solo travelers and couples, as well as groups.

The hostel also has a Camping Barn and a Conference facility that can accommodate up to two hundred people for seminars, conferences, training, or other group functions. The hostel has facilities to sleep a hundred and ten people onsite and additional bed space can be arranged in Ballintoy. They will also take care of full catering for conferences on request.

Summary

This is a very inviting hostel in a wonderful location on a beautiful coastline. The staff are welcoming and helpful and the facilities are perfect for self-catering or walking into the village to the local pub. Sheep Island View Hostel is well suited for individuals, couples, families, and groups, offering clean and comfortable budget accommodations.

2   Disappointing We were so excited to stay here after reading about it. I reserved way in advance. When we arrived, we couldn't find anyone around. The kitchen was bustling and they told us the people are often not around, but walk down the hill to their house to get them. We did and the girl came up and gave us our room. She kept reminding us to be careful not to trip on the carpet which was torn up on a step. The room was so tiny it was beyond belief. I later found out that we had paid BP40, but they charge 35 for that room. The noise level was beyond description, we could hear every single word spoken in the kitchen and rec room below, as well as every single sound in the bathroom in the room next to ours. The topper was that the tiny bathroom has a mirror about 6ft off the ground on the wall opposite the sink! Good planning! When we went to plug in our computer and hair dryer, we found there was NO outlet in the room. The next morning, we asked the owner when she arrived about this. She looked at me blankly. She said she had no idea the room had no outlet. REALLY? They offered to move us to another room. So that day, we dragged all our stuff to a room near the reception desk, which was a much better room, though the "shower" was just a drain in the floor at one end and a shower curtain. In this room, we heard the girl talking and the phone ringing until late at the front desk. We checked out a day early, but she refused to apply the deposit toward the two nights we were paying for, keeping the extra four pounds. So petty. On a more general note: there is no view from here, the water is across the road and blocked by trees. The kitchen is excellent and kept very clean.  , USA ()
5   Top notch hostel We were a little dismayed when our Paddywagon tour had to change its overnight accommodation from Derry to Ballintoy, but once we checked in, there were no more complaints. The hostel is spotlessly clean, comfortably furnished, and with one of the best kitchens I've seen in a hostel. Rooms are up to six beds, with en-suites. Definitely worth a stay.  , Australia ()

5  I'm French and I really can say that it's one of the best hostels I have ever been to. It's so nice...and the staff are so friendly! I thank Cara and her parents so much for our stay with all the international students the last year. That was one of the best moments of my life.  ()
