The Hostelz.com Review
Travellers House is a modern, clean, and stylish hostel in a two-hundred-fifty-year-old building right in the heart of downtown Lisbon. On arrival, you are greeted by very helpful staff who give you a lot of their time to tell you about the hostel as well as the many rules.

The Location

Travellers House is located on Rua Augusta, which is the main pedestrian street of downtown Lisbon. This means you have shops, cafes, and public transport all within walking distance. Baixa/Chiado Metro Station is only a five-minute walk away, so you can easily get to the hostel if you are coming by train or regional bus; if you are coming from the airport, you can catch the Aerobus, which stops at either Rossio or Commercio, within a ten-minute walk. Many of Lisbon's attractions are also within walking distance of downtown, which saves you money. Being located on the main street, though, you do get a bit of street/pedestrian noise but there are no bars nearby, so it is not too bad. There is only quite a small sign for the hostel but it is right opposite the Millenium BCP Musuem/Bank and an Ask Lisbon Information Kiosk.

Rooms and Bathrooms

Travellers House offers four- and six-bed mixed dorm rooms as well as private singles and doubles. They now also offer studio rooms, which are located ten minutes from the hostel. The dorm beds are sturdy wood, which means they don't move around and disturb everyone else in the room. Each bed also has its own locker with lock as well as a safe you can program for secure storage of your valuables. The private rooms are also really nice and quite spacious with a nice view of Rua Augusta, but lack a mirror.

Rooms are spread over four floors and each floor has its own set of single-sex bathrooms that each contain two toilets and showers that are always clean and usually have no queue to use, either. They also provide you with a free towel, which is always handy. The showers also have their own basket as well as hooks within the cubicle, so your stuff will stay dry and you will have no problems with changing.

Common Spaces

On the main first floor, you will find the reception area as well as four different common areas. There is a small kitchen and dining area with a hob and microwave as well as a TV lounge where you can watch cable TV or borrow a DVD. If you want to relax, there is also a music lounge filled with beanbags that also has a bookcase filled with travel guides from around the world and a small book exchange. Also they have free computers to use or if they are busy you can borrow an iPad; free Wi-Fi is available on all floors.

This is quite a social hostel, with events on every night as well as daily tours. It is very modern and clean and the staff are always happy to help. You get a range of ages, as it is quite an upmarket hostel. You also get breakfast cooked for you everyday between the generous hours of 8 and 11 a.m., which includes scrambled eggs and toast as well as cereals. Tea, coffee, and hot chocolate are available all day. The dining room chairs (also the only place you may eat) are possibly the most impractical seats, though, as you sink down and can't even reach the table. They also have free luggage storage that only staff can access.

Summary

Overall this is a really good, social hostel with a wide variety of travelers and plenty of spaces to chill out. It can be a bit more expensive than other Lisbon hostels of a similar excellent standard, though.

5  Great! This is the best hostel ever! Staff is amazingly helpful and extremely kind. The position is great and not too noisy. Book ahead otherwise you won't be able to get a bed!  , italian ()
4  Excellent! Perfect location, friendly helpful staff, amazing breakfast, clean, and safe. I was there for two weeks in June 2007. I would give it five Stars except for noise from my room right on street. Just bought earplugs. Easy enough to get on internet, kitchen available if you want to cook, store food, reasonably priced laundry service, staff always pleasant and helpful. Oh, and huge lockers under the bunk beds for storage, bring your own lock. Male bath with construction while I was there and completed, so sharing a while, but hot water always.  , USA ()
5  Perfect Just landed home there, we were out to watch celtic vs. benfica. Lisbon is brilliant and travellers house is perfect, right in the centre of everything worthwhile. happy hour is unreal, 1.50 euro to empty the keg. The staff are brilliant!  , ireland ()
5  Fantastic! Best Hostel I Have Ever Stayed In! I can't say enough good things about this hostel. The staff there is absolutely fantastic. Everyone was so friendly! They go out of their way to help you with your travel and with having fun. I loved the fact that they gave you free sheets, towels, and eggs for breakfast. I have never stayed in a hostel that served a hot breakfast like they do. The living area is very chill and cozy. You can watch TV, use the internet or cook yourself dinner. I stayed in a four-bed room and it was perfect. I met some girls here that I ended traveling with for the next four days. They even give you a free lock to use while you're here, and you can fit your entire luggage in the locker that is under the bed. You will not regret it. Location is perfect, right on a street with lots of shops and outdoor cafes.  , USA ()
5  Friendly, clean, very chilled out! We only stayed for one night before flying back from Lisbon but we all thought it was a really nice hostel! The rooms were clean and bright and the personal lockers were a good idea. Staff were friendly, internet free, and the main communal room felt really chilled out. Breakfast was good too.  , British ()
5  I traveled for three months and this was the best hostel I stayed at. It is in a ridiculously good location (there is even a tourist information booth right outside the door!), it is clean, with really nice beds. Free internet is great and the free breakfast is amazing (this woman makes you scrambled eggs right there for free!). There are two lounge areas one with a TV with cable (almost all channels in English) and the other with drinks for sale. Every night I was there people hung out there until late, it was such a chill and amazing atmosphere! Stay at this hostel!  , USA ()
