Hostelz.com Guest Reviews

Not so great I'm usually not one to leave a negative review, but the great reviews of this place lured my husband and I to stay here the first few nights of our honeymoon, and we didn't have a very good experience. The hostel manager was amazing when I e-mailed -- so friendly and helpful, I just knew the Allihies hostel would be our very favorite stop. We arrived in the early evening. From the first, the manager didn't seem very happy to have us. We went, one time, to the pub next door, and the people there weren't terribly friendly; we mentioned we were from America, and a few people mocked the American dollar. We rang the manager's bell around 8:30 that night to ask a question, and he emerged very irritated and rude. He asked if we knew what time it was; we actually had not, because it was full light outside (to us, our first day there, it FELT like 4 or 5). He helped us with our laundry but was very rude about it. On another occasion, we tried to turn the laundry over, but could not get the machine to start. I moved the laundry from washer to dryer and then went to get him. He told me not to touch his machines again because guests cannot be trusted not to break them. Finally, on our last day in Allihies, we were told we would have to move to another room in the hostel. We said that was fine, but we were on our way out to Dursey Island. We returned to find our stuff dumped on a couch in a public room; we couldn't get into our new room for some time. Finally, the manager asked us how we felt about the new U.S. president. My husband made a vanilla comment, not looking to get into politics, and the hostel manager scolded us for not supporting America's great new president (we don't NOT support him, and had said nothing of the sort). For a long time we though it was "just us," but almost a year later, I believe the hostel manager (owner?) is simply not very accommodating, or either does not care for Americans. The area, however, is fabulous, and Dursey Island is well worth the visit! — Anonymous , America (2011-01-04)

I have visited Allihies on three occasions and have stayed for a number of days on two of these occasions. My first stay in this town was in Summer of 2003 at the old Mine Captains house which is situated on the outskirts of the village. It was an enchanting house and the magic of it was made all the more memorable by the brilliant hospitality of Mr John Kelly who ran the hostel. Earlier this year I stayed once again as a guest of Mr kelly in what is now (to me anyway) the new hostel. The hostel is first class and is operated by Mr Kelly in a manner that encourages a guest to postpone further travel plans and to just, stay awhile longer. Mr Kelly's ability to problem solve, his extensive knowledge of the local area and it's history and his ability to enchant the traveler with his many great stories and music is a gift not easily found today. He makes a weary traveler welcome in a manner that was once the norm in Ireland as Cead Mile Failte, a hundred thousand welcomes. I hope someday to return and spend time once again under your pleasant and welcoming roof. In my opinion Mr Kelly is Allihies Village Hostel! — Derek Carroll (2006-09-03)

The Allihies Village Hostel is not just a place to stay, it is a state of mind. I have never stayed in a hostel with such a relaxed, friendly, laid back, and welcoming atmosphere. It is right in the middle of the villoage where there is a local shop where you can buy anything from organic mustard to crab toes! The kitchhen in the hostel is supperbly equipped and you can bring in pints of Guinness or Murphy's from the next door pub to accompany your meal. There are great walks in the area -- beautiful beaches annd wild rugged scenery. John -- who manages the hostel -- is fantastic and creates a great atmosphere and occasionally lights a fire in the courtyard and with his guitar undder the night sky lifts your soul. Great place! — Brian and Odette (2006-08-14)
