The Hostelz.com Review
If you are going to explore the Cabot Trail the Cabot Trail Hostel is a good place to stay. It is only open in the summer months and sleeps in about twenty people.

The Location

The hostel is situated at Pleasant Bay in the far north of the Cabot Trail. It takes about five hours from Halifax by car. There is no public transport to this place, so you can either hitchhike or book in with Salty Bear Adventure Travel since they offer transportation around the trail. Within walking distance there is a small grocery store, a gift shop, and a whale watching company. There are no bars, supermarkets, or banks around so do all your shopping before you come to Pleasant Bay. Also within walking distance there is a beach where you can enjoy a beautiful sunset. If you are interested in hiking, the must-see Skyline Trail can be reached within fifteen minutes by car.

Rooms and Bathrooms

The rooms, the kitchen, and the bathrooms are clean and tidy. The dorms come with free bedding and are huge enough to store all the hiking equipment but they are very basic. Security seems to be good with a lock for the door to the hostel and locks for each room.

Common Spaces

There is a common area for relaxing with a couch, chairs, a table, and a TV. There are free games and a bookshelf. They have two kitchens that are well equipped. You can have free tea and coffee all day around and they provide free wireless as well, but there is no computer to use the internet. In the backyard and beside the hostel there is an outside sitting area with a BBQ and in front of the house there is free parking on the street.

Summary

This hostel is a good for a stopover while exploring the Cabot Trail. It is a clean, tidy, and secure. You have all you need here but it's basic and is missing the the homey atmosphere that entices you to stay longer.

5  Awesome Experience I had an amazing stay at this hostel. The area is beautiful and there are great hiking tours and sights to see. The hostel itself was quiet, clean, and well-equipped with little extras that most hostelers forget to pack (flashlights, hiking sticks, board games, lighters for bonfires!).  , Canada ()
4  Loved It I really enjoyed my stay at the Cabot Trail Hostel in July 2010. The rooms are very clean and fresh. The new owner is very friendly and welcoming. There was a very large common room and a cozy TV Room. It was great to see a Moose walking through the garden and i loved the short walk down to the harbour and beach.  , Canada ()
4  It is very clean but too small (the kitchen inside) location is great! it is very easy to find. and the guy work there was nice. the beds are not comfortable. too soft, but it is clean. the kitchen inside was too small and too close to dorm room, so basically u have to use the one outside the main area and it can gets pretty cold in the morning.  , USA ()
4  Not really fancy but clean and ok to spend the night This hostel is an ok place to stay when you are doing the Cabot trial. It is clean and functional. Therefore this hostel is on a very good location, it felt a bit like the middle of nowhere, and you have to make yourself at home as the owners do not live nearby. When you enter you have to call a phone number and make yourself at home first and later in the evening the owners come for the check in. So if you don't have a problem with that it is a good place. And additionally the owners are very very nice and willing to help you with everything.  , Netherlands ()
2  A lot of potential I feel like this hostel was once a lot better. The manager is very very nice, but it seems as if he really doesn't care that much about his business these days and it has become very run down and shabby. Most of the amenities listed aren't actually available. it felt like a hostel that had been closed for two years and then just opened up again without being refurbished at all. That said, I never felt unsafe there -- it is in the middle of nowhere, but a very beautiful nowhere. and the beds were comfortable. this would be an ok place to crash if you were really tired from driving or if you planned on camping and got rained out. hopefully, someone will buy it and turn it into something great. judging by the comments, I hope that it turns back into what it used to be. the showers don't work very well and neither does the pay phone.  , California ()
4  Very nice hostel; you can't beat the location either!  ()
5  We arrived even when the place was full last summer, but the host did everything he could to accommodate us!! Thanks :)  ()
