The Hostelz.com Review
This is an extremely pleasant, well located, central hostel. The rooms are nicely furnished (the doubles even have a TV). The kitchen is a good size, although could do with more cooking areas. There is plenty of seating, including an outside dining area. There is a also a comfy lounge area, and a seperate TV room, with loads of videos. A new pool table has just been installed with a charge of $1 per game. One of the hostel's main attractions is its free spa pool. It's small (only three can get in a time) but it's great, especially after a glacier hike. It is really hot though, which may be a cunning plan to stop people from staying in too long!

There are reasonably priced laundry facilities and bike hire, and plenty of off-street parking. Showers are plentiful, hot, and powerful. It is less than a five minute walk to the grocery store and the main street where are the glacier tours, heli-tours, etc. leave from. There is also a great pub across the road.

Internet is pricey at $2 for 10 minutes, but there is a bus across the road (yes, really) which only costs $5 for one hour!

We would highly recommend this hostel to anyone.

This hostel is excellently located and the rooms are very clean and cosy (with two heaters in our double). The soup every night is tasty and with some bread is enough for a meal! The kitchen facilities are very good -- with everything you need and plenty of storage. Toilets and showers were in excellent condition. Staff were generally friendly, however when all our food was stolen overnight, they were unhelpful and unsympathetic, which was very disappointing.

Stayed in a double room and it came with free towels, the room was nice, clean and roomy, a great choice! Every evening they provide you with free soup, always a plus! Kitchen and common areas are very nice, clean, and well equipped. The free spa is also a plus, very nice to relax in after a hard day tackling the glaciers.

This hostel is really nice. Double rooms are big and clean. Same comment for the kitchen that is also big. They offer internet and other facilities. We had problems with nise, but it was ok. It's a good option to stay in Franz Joseph -- close to the glaciers!

Definitely a great place to stay in Franz. Free soup in the evening (not great but it is free). Friendly staff and yes, the motel units are lovely. Lots of people to chat to. The kitchen is a bit packed at times, though. Also if you go there make sure you do the trip at night to see the glowworms up the road -- they are amazing.

This was a very interesting place and well worth the stay. The free soup in the evenings was great, we just toasted ourselves some bread and that did us for dinner. We stayed in a motel unit which was very quant, with old brick-a-brack and strange furnishings, but very livable. There were free movies available from reception to watch on the TV in the room, which along with relaxing in the spa, was a great way to recover from a long hike.

Excellent place. We stayed in a motel unit so we had our own bathroom, TV, and kitchenette. It was really cosy. The staff were also friendly and helpful.

We had a double room, which also had a bathroom, kitchen and TV. It was an excellent place to stay for a few nights — the staff were really helpful and friendly (although I think they may be changing hands soon). I would definitely recommend this place. The free soup at 6 p.m. each night is lovely — make sure you get in early as it soon disappears.

This was the highest-rated hostel in Franz Josef according to BBH [Budget Backpacker Hostels] and I always go by them. It was clean and quiet (I was able to nap peacefully after my arduous hike up the glacier) and the spa looked very inviting. It's not a place to stay forever, as it lacked a certain charm, but no one stays in Franz Josef for that long anyway. This place is worth a stay.

I loved this hostel! We stayed in a motel unit and they are lush. The staff are very helpful and friendly and the communal areas are warm and cosy. This place attracts an older crowd. It's in a good location.
