The Hostelz.com Review
Kiwi's Nest is a warm, friendly hostel, reminiscent of a homestay. It is well located eight blocks from the Octagon, the center of Dunedin, and just down the road from the University of Otago. Travelers without cars will need to take a taxi from the Intercity bus station twelve blocks away, but the fare is inexpensive. For those with cars, parking is available nearby.
Rooms and Bathrooms
The female dorm is in the main building. Two other dorm rooms are in an outbuilding just outside the house, close to both kitchens and to Kiwi's Nest's single, kiosked computer. There are two toilets and two shower rooms on each floor of the house. Besides the two kitchens -- one of which is in an outbuilding and the other on a deck -- there are two breakfast nooks, with microwave, in the main building.
The property was a doctor's office and clinic for many years, so many of the bathrooms and toilets are accessible. Showers are hot and vigorous. Most of the rooms in the house are singles and doubles, and there is a one-bedroom apartment, with its own kitchen and deck space, just outside.
Common Spaces
There's a ground-floor lounge (with television, breakfast nook, dining table, and book exchange), and a second-floor breakfast nook. As mentioned, the kitchens are in outbuildings, and the single washer and dryer are in a lean-to near one of the kitchens. Both washer and dryer are unusually small, and the dryer in particular will dry only half the small washer's load at once.
Summary
We found Kiwi's Nest a friendly and pleasant place, safe and comfortable. It has a lovely garden, with a bench and picnic table in it, and more flowers are visible from the deck around the kitchen. When we were there, most guests were older, though that might change at a time when the University of Otago's classes are in session.

The Kiwi Nest is a top notch place to stay, people are friendly and helpful. Only complaint, that pull-out bed has gotta go -- most uncomfortable thing I have ever slept on. — Cheryl Cowmeadow (2007-03-02)

We stayed in Kiwi's Nest for a night last weekend (Feb. 2005). It was beautiful, clean and peaceful. The rooms were spacious and well kept. This place would be a heaven for those who want to be close to the city, yet want to enjoy some quiet nights. Thank you very much for the excellent accommodation, staff...and keep it up. — Mandy (2005-02-07)

Our stay in December 2004 was so lovely that we went back to Dunedin to stay here again. The rooms were spacious and clean, and the staff were simply lovely. I would definitely recommend this Kiwi's Nest. — Kate (2004-11-26)
