The Hostelz.com Review
Sunrise Lodge is a wonderful little hostel located just a short walk from Kaikoura town centre. The owners are fantastic and really go to the extreme to make you feel welcome. A free pick-up is provided from the bus-stop in town and they take the time to show you to your bed and introduce the other people staying at the hostel. Likewise, at the end of your stay, there is no pressure to leave before a certain time and they will drop you back into town to meet your bus.

The hostel itself is a small bungalow behind the owners' home. There is an open-plan living/dining/kitchen area that is extremely well equipped and spotlessly clean. There are magazines, books, board games, cards, and a CD player/radio for entertainment, and everything you could possibly want for cooking with in the kitchen. The rooms have just a few beds (no bunks!) and all bedding is provided. A washing machine is available for use free of charge and there is the option to either dry clothes outside on the washing line or for a small charge, the owners will let you use their dryer.

Each morning the owner goes out to catch crayfish and you are welcome to go out too - everyone thoroughly enjoyed it. The beach is just a minute's walk from the back gate and town is another 10 minutes along the road. This hostel really is a little gem!

5 Mega
stopped here 01/12/2005 till 06/12/2005 but was only gonna stop for two nights originally. did so much here and that was all thanks to the owners. had loads of info available about things to see here. Went cray fishing two days with brent, released a blue penguin back into the wild one night, went sperm whale watching one morning, and watch the sun rise on the pebble beach one morning about 4 with all the good friends we made while stopping here this short time. Mega.

5 A nice place to stay in Kaikoura
We went there in April and got the en-suite room on the back which has a nice "sunrise" view of the ocean. The room was spotless with four single beds (no bunk). All the amenities are there including kitchen, refrig, microwave, utensil, and even a radio. The hosts were nice and appeared excited to welcome guesses. The only catch was that there was no heater installed in the living area, so we all had to group inside the bedroom after a while. A nice place to stay, overall.

3 We only stayed here one night and didn't eat in but the facilities looked fine. No bunks but the bedrooms surround the lounge so we were kept awake by people chatting in the lounge. Seemed like it would have been a nice place if we'd have had longer there.

5 This hostel was great. There was a really friendly and personal touch to the place. And it was so nice sleeping in a single, non bunk bed for a change. When i am next in Kaikoura, i will definitely be sleeping here again.

5 The best backpackers in New Zealand!!! I was planning to stay for three and decided to stay three more nights. This is really home away from home. The owners make you feel like you are family, and they are so nice! Do not miss going fishing with Brent in the morning.

1 The facility is all nice and clean. The owners are kind and friendly. But showers didn't work properly. One of Japanese staff members (the shorter one) was really rude to me.

5 I loved it here. I had been to Kaikoura a few years before and stayed at The Dusky Lodge, which was good enough but lacked the seclusion and comfort of Sunrise Lodge. I stayed in the cottage behind the hostel with my mother and it was one of the highlights of our trip. The main hostel looked inviting as well, with a clean and relaxed common area and kitchen. Try borrowing the bikes if you want an easy trip into town (5 minutes). At the time, the owners were rehabilitating injured birds on their front lawn, which made for some interesting photo opportunities. Some people may not appreciate the train rumbling behind them in the middle of the night but once you get used to it, it's not so bad...it's actually quite romantic. Highly recommended!
