Really good location, clean, and safe. A good hostel, based in the valley close to clubs, bars, and restaurants. Staff were friendly. Rooms clean, and there were plenty of lockers to lock up valuables. — ursula , u.k (2012-05-08)
Rude Staff I stayed here for 3 nights with my mates, we didnt mind the room but it was very small for what you pay. It is advertised it is right near the train station but in fact it is quiet a walk. Dont bother asking the front desk for directions they are hopeless. I will not say all staff are crap but the few good ones get over shadowed by the ones tat do a crap job. There was a guy there one night making a scene and being aggressive, when we approach the young girl at the front desk -- short blonde hair girl on the night shift. When we told her she looked like she didnt give a sh*t and just said "oh thats (his name -- forgot it)" and that was it nothing was done about it. I will never go back there and dont think anyone else should, unless you over priced sh*tty rooms, no secruity and staff that dont care about you or the place. — Anonymous (2011-06-01)

Clean rooms, large kitchen, and social people but unhelpful staff I stayed here for a few weeks before getting work and finally having the sense to move out. I started in one of the large dorms -- 20 bed to be exact. I was told that I would have a bedside light but there was none. I frequently asked for one, was told one would be installed by Jordan (the assistant manager I think, and a very strange guy), and this never happened. At first the others in my room were unsocial, then a great bunch of people moved in who I had some great parties and nights out with, and sadly after they left a bunch of English lager lout idiots came in and decided to argue and shout and call people at 4am. Despite 2 TV rooms being advertised there is only 1, and it's small, and it stinks. There IS a hot tub, but it's more of a lukewarm tub, and the bubbles don't work, but it's still a cool place to hang out and you can drink beer from the bar there. The bar -- Birdie Num Nums -- is advertised as being part of the hostel but it isn't. When things are good, Bunk advertise it, when something bad happens, they distance themselves saying the bar is run separately and is nothing to do with them. The majority of the bar staff (especially some skinny emo guy with a fringe) are very miserable and rude but a couple are nice. The manager of the bar is a nasty man and the bouncers are idiots. They literally throw you out for no reason or won't let you in even if the place is dead. Despite staying next door and having a 20 meter walk to the bar at night you have to leave the building, walk around the corner and queue up outside if you want to get in. I saw one guy kicked out for dancing (yes, dancing). I was sober and well dressed one night, went in only for my friend to be turned away for wearing informal jeans. He got dressed, I was let in again, then my arm was grabbed as I walked up the stairs and I was then asked to leave and told 'not tonight'. Bizarre. Despite staying in the hostel and giving the bar most of their business you are treated like scum. Thankfully, the kitchen is huge and fairly well equipped although there are no ovens just hobs. It is a great hostel for people wanting to cook or hang out downstairs. You are not allowed alcohol (as they want you to spend all your money in Birdies) but it is easy to have some wine or beer without too much fuss. Take care of your stuff, I had a memory card go missing in the bar and someone stole my beloved Joy Division t-shirt FROM MY BACKPACK in the dorm room. Scum. The beds are the squeakiest beds I have ever encountered in a hostel. While I was there, there was a worker doing the night shifts who SEXUALLY ASSAULTED one of my friends while there. He quickly gained a reputation for cornering women or coming on to them aggressively but it took a whole week for him to be sacked. The bar advertises free meals but they are not -- you have to buy a drink first, but this is still a fairly good deal. The nightly games run by Hoff (a really nice guy and a good laugh who deserves to work in a better hostel) are really good for winning stuff and meeting people. In a nutshell, if you want clean rooms, a big kitchen, a fairly cheap stay, and to meet lots of people stay here. Just don't go to Birdies, be prepared for some weird staff, some loud people, possible theft, and a few things not to be there despite being advertised in a magazine or whatever. — Jon , UK (2011-01-09)

Overcrowded, not very clean You don't get much space in the room, for the money you pay. My room was noisy and not very clean. The staff are fine. It is ok, if you have no other options, but I wouldn't recommend it too much. — Lior , Israel (2009-04-15)
Arrogant staff I stayed here for one week and that was enough. The staff are rude and very up themselves, sad thing is, they dance behind reception and prance around thinking they are "cool," trust me they are far from that. The Manager Ben was also very arrogant when i asked him about changing rooms because the guy in my room, a local who appears to have a drug problem and wants to tell anyone who will listen about his problems. The facilities are ok, but for the price you are paying it is not worth it. Especially when i had planned on staying long term. The bar is very noisy at night, so if you want sleep dont bother coming here. Also, i was led to believe that the hostel is in the City, its not, its in the Valley, which is Brisbanes homeless/drug addict central. — Gavin , Australia (2008-08-02)

Awesome! I loved Bunk! I thought the staff were awesome! The rooms were clean! Way cleaner then any of the other hostels that we stayed! There were no bugs. the bathrooms were cleaned everyday! There were lockers to lock our stuff away! The beds were good -- probably would have been better without the plastic on them! I will return to this Hostel again! — Candice , Canada (2008-06-11)

Clean, big, and close The hostel is very big but has a lot of facilities. The pool is very nice but located right in the bar area, but it is heated. The TV room smells a bit but they have another one in the lobby that is nice. Bar is very nice with pavilion style coaches around. fast internet. good walking distance to the city. Clean rooms and good aircon. Staff is really friendly and local. Because the staff is local they know the area really well and are helpful. The downside is you have to pay for parking. I would stay here. — Kim , UK (2008-02-25)
A rather ratty hostel tacked on the side of a huge bar This place has been open for a couple of years now, and is already in deep trouble. It's basically one huge bar -- and we're talking about one of the biggest in Brisbane -- with some dorms tacked on the side. Now, this may be for you, particularly if you want to party all night long. If you don't you will hate the place. Some rooms on the ground floor open out right onto reception, and you have to walk through the internet cafe to get to your bathroom/shower on the other side. Not good. The single rooms are the worst, Small and cramped, very overpriced, and smelly. Some only have a tiny sliver of a window (which you can't open, hence the smell). The lux doubles are better. Be warned that the air con is on twenty-four hours a day, and you can't turn it off. Few real travelers seem to stay here -- it's just the party crowd, so the small Kitchen and TV rooms are above the bar (as are some of the rooms -- these at a discount are better if you plan to party) and are rather impersonal. There is nowhere else to chill out other than the bar, or the weird darkened hovel of a TV room. The pool is very small, but on a hot day is welcome as a kind of plunge pool (even if everyone in the bar stares at you). A plus point is there is some nice art around the place -- almost a theme -- of maps of Queensland with models stuck on them. Odd. Personally, I couldn't wait to leave the place. — Lorks , UK (2008-01-23)

The rooms in this place really varied -- mine was scummy, the bathroom door wouldn't lock, and there were no windows. My friend's on the second floor was nice, all dorm beds had private reading lights and little storage cubbyholes. It's an ok hostel -- has a great location, but could be cleaner. It is a party place so if that's all you want it's fine. — TuesdayGirl , UK (2007-04-08)
stayed here for four nights, absolutely awful place! although some of the staff are friendly and somewhat helpful it doesn't make up for the state of the hostel. this is more like a frat house than a hostel, the bar is the only thing they seem to make an effort with and thats only good if your here to do nothing but drink. i had no sleep on two nights, (i'm aware and don't mind people talking in dorms -- it is shared accommodation after all, but within reason) first when two extremely drunk girls spent four hours screaming around the dorm and when it was said to staff at 4 in the morning they just shrugged it off. again another night a guy vomited in the shower in the dorm, as well as urinated in it, for two hours, when this was said to the staff their reply was 'well, this is a young persons hostel.' only being twenty-seven, i think that attitude says a lot about the running of this hostel, they are primarily interested in getting very young, naive backpackers pissed so they can be fleeced and think they had a great time. also their security as stated in their website is a complete lie -- half the rooms don't have any lockers and none have private screens on the beds. the kitchen is always a mess, very little fridge space for the amount of people they cram into the hostel, and there is no chill-out areas - their TV room is like a homeless shelter. this hostel is great if all you want to do is spend your time drunk and the rest hungover, if you're here to see australia then never stay here, it ruined my stay to brisbane. — rob (2006-10-22)
This place is poor. The TV room looks like a common room in jail and the kitchen doesn't supply enough bowls and pots and pans. The rooms are smelly and nasty and everything is filthy. At least the place is safe and big enough to swing several cats in there. It is still too expensive and I don't really recommend this hostel. There are better ones! — Francis (2006-10-16)
The rooms were nasty -- the bathroom absolutely gross, dirty and the bed looked someone slept in it. The price was far far to high. I booked it through flightcentre and the photos of the rooms definitely don't match what you end up getting. The staff and manager are the rudest I have ever experienced! — Anonymous (2006-07-22)
The staff are the rudest I have ever experienced! Definitely not there for the right reasons and dont really give a sh*t about backpackers. its strickly a business there to make money in their minds! — Anna (2006-06-22)

They have now supplied more cutlery, bowls, and plates as they realised people had complained there weren't enough. I had a great time here, the bar is wicked, loads of seats and they have cools huts in the beer gardens, lots of space to chill out day or night. Its a funky hostel. And i found the staff to be great. The bar gets really busy on Friday and Saturday night, so if you're in to party party party, this is the place to be. By far the best hostel in Brisbane, and was named best hostel in Queensland 2005. I do think they need to spend a bit on keeping the place as good as it maybe was last year. And as for the ants, i've not seen any, but be glad it wasnt snakes or spiders as you might find in some hostels! — Hannah (2006-06-05)
really awful place, staff were rude and really unhelpful. we were told we would get picked up from the bus station but when we rang after a twelve-hour journey they said there were no more buses running that day and it was only 7 p.m. all the internets broke down and no one fixed them, the kitchen was crap, only a few rings to cook on and no bowls, hardly any plates or cutlery and the staff cleaned the kitchen at 9 a.m. when most people were trying to having breakfast. worst was the ants coming up through the shower floor in our bathroom. a really waste of money and its not cheap either, stay somewhere else. — rach and jamie (2006-05-29)
