HI - Whiskey Jack Wilderness Hostel has no electrical power, which really only works against you if you have stuff like cameras to recharge. Propane gas powers the lamps, refrigerators, water heaters for showers, and just about anything else. The hostel has only dorm beds, and the kitchen/dining rooms and porch are the only common areas. It's a wilderness hostel, so do you actually expect pots and pans with lids that match? Don't knock it if you've never tried it!
Host Tom is great (so mellow and cool)! He'll tell you all about the hostel's history -- it was originally the staff house to a hotel built in the '20s. In 1937, an avalanche hit the hotel, and in 1967 another one finished it off, leaving the staff house to be turned into a hostel in 1969.
Who needs a common room? As the sign out front says, "Take a hike!" Yoho National Park is truly the gem of the Canadian Rockies, with attractions such as Emerald Lake, Spiral Tunnels, Takakkawa Falls (great view from the hostel porch!), and Natural Bridge, plus some of the premier day hikes in the world! The beautifully stark Iceline (pictured) starts right at the hostel, and Wiwaxy Gap/Huber Ledges in the Lake O'Hara region is so stunning a photo would never do it justice -- no joke! If the weather's nice, you may never want to leave Lake Oesa! Nightlife, schmightlife!
