Loved this place I had a fantastic week here. The staff were very helpful. I was so unsure on what to do in the city and wasn't even sure how many days I would stay in christchurch. I just walked in hoping to book the room for a night and in the end I stayed a week, and thanks to the hostel had plenty to do. The hostel went above and beyond. It was so clean and all the staff including the owners have traveled pretty much everywhere, so they are great at advising when and where. This place is brilliant for anyone. Great atmosphere beautiful courtyard area's with herb garden, fresh bed in the morning and hand made furnature. The beds are so comfy I wanted to take them with me. Thank you Old country house will be back next time i'm in CHCH. — N D Booth , England, UK (2011-05-30)

This is a great hostel. It is very clean. The staff are great (and the lovely dog Murphy). The rooms are spacious and comfy. The only drawback for me was the lack of fridge storage in the kitchens, with only a fridge in each kitchen it could be a bit squashed. Location is fine -- fifteen minutes' walk to town and just over the road from a decent supermarket, Subway, and other useful shops. Bus stops right outside. — Paula D , Ireland (2008-04-14)

Fantastic -- really good beds, clean, lovely, warm Really enjoyed my stay here. The hostel is about fifteen minutes' walk from the city but has supermarket, butcher, post just across the road (very important for me not traveling with my own car.). Staff were going out of their way to answer all my questions and help me plan my time in this city and the bus to Queenstown. One of the best I stayed in New Zealand so far. Thanks for a wonderful stay and keep up the good work! — Franz , Germany (2007-06-23)

We booked for three nights and ended up staying and staying for nine! Yes, it is about a fifteen- to twenty-minute walk to town but it's really worth it. There are local shops for all the necessities and there are local buses that stop nearby. I found the hostel to be well run, very clean, very friendly, and really nicely set up. the kitchen/dining area promotes a friendly social atmosphere. It really was a home from home. I know a lot depends on the people you happen to meet when you travel, but this was just lovely. So book and enjoy! — Nicole (2007-02-07)

I know everyone loves this place, but I really didn't care for it. There are tons of rule sheets everywhere -- and everyone was kind of snotty who stayed there (although the staff was nice). Mostly though, it was freezing! I stayed in January and it was incredibly cold, even with extra blankets. The heat doesn't kick in until it's 50F I think. It's very clean, but very sterile. A long walk from the city center, and the neighborhood doesn't offer much beyond a small supermarket and a couple of restaurants. If you can be closer in, I'd opt for something more homey myself. — Stella (2007-01-19)

Absolutely gorgeous place. Not centrally located but within walking distance of the city centre and is over the road from a bus stop. Supermarkets and shops literally round the corner. Communal areas lovely and clean as well as the bedrooms. Overall a nice homey feel. — Mark and Debs (2006-07-18)

This is one great hostel. The kitchen was marvelous, and so was everything else, down to the boots doubling as pot plants. — Nimo (2005-10-27)

This was an awesome hostel. It was clean, homey, and just like the name suggests, an actual old country house. The only thing not in its favor was the fact that they do not pick you up from the airport or train station, nor do they provide a shuttle service to the city. It is a little far out, but worth the walk. I was very impressed. — Karen (2005-08-30)

Definitely the best hostel in Christchurch. I know because I have stayed in a few Christchurch hostels...
The place is simply gorgeous! The owners have truly made every effort to attend to detail. The dorm beds are high enough so I could sit on the bottom bunk without bending my head. Every bed has its own reading light, plenty of hooks, and most important this time of the year (winter in New Zealand!) the whole place is well heated. I must not forget to mention the beds. None of that sink-in experience, but a proper comfortable firm mattress, which gave me some of my best nights' sleep in New Zealand.
Showers are spacious and seem to have endless hot water supply. Security is excellent with modern electronic locks, especially for a city hostel. And the garden is great — so is the help-yourself herb garden. Staff are extremely friendly and helpful, which really rounded up the total experience to be that of a 5 star excellence.

This is the best place to stay in Christchurch. It has fabulous facilities, big rooms, friendly staff, and it's safe. I've stayed here for three nights, and I will go back again for two nights when I finish my tour of New Zealand. — Anonymous (2005-04-12)

This is the nicest hostel I have ever stayed in. The rooms are enormous, bright and airy with really comfy beds. The old Colonial-style building has lovely high ceilings, and the owners have made the whole place feel like someone's home. The kitchen and lounge are fabulous, and there are squishy sofas, a library, games, and a well-stocked kitchen. Also lovely outside areas with picnic tables and chairs and lawn. Very laid-back atmosphere — it's not really a party place. It's about a 15 minute walk into town, but there are shops right next door. — Anonymous (2005-01-16)
