The Hostelz.com Review
The hostel Mountain House is across from the YHA building on the main road in Arthur's Village. Actually, the same owners also run the YHA. We were told that if you arrive early, you get Mountain House dorm (the luxury dorms) but late arrivals get the old YHA, which are basically painted concrete block dorms. Check-in for the cottages is at the Mountain House reception.

We stayed at the cottages which are also part of Mountain House. They are small bungalows with three bedrooms, shared living room (with wood burning stove), dining area, kitchen, and shared showers and toilets. Each bedroom is rented separately, or you can rent the whole house. The bedrooms have individual radiators. The owners supply some firewood and starters, but the occupants are in charge of making and keeping the fire going. It was a great social setup as we all got to talk to the other inhabitants.

There is ample parking. The cottages are behind the village and it is close enough to walk. There is also a laundry (for a fee) and the grounds are nicely landscaped. The cottage we were in had good reading materials on NZ outdoors, board games, etc. The maintenance is good. Each bedroom is locked, as is the front and back door. ~

I also loved the cottages, the living area is shared and comes with woodburning stove and lots of good magazines. Nice grounds and there is a laundry in the back. Wobbly Kea restaurant and Bar in town is excellent, but be wary of early closing hours (as everywhere in rural NZ).

An oasis in the mountains. We stayed only a night in this hostel and shared a private house with four other people (three double rooms). Nice wooden floors, fully equipped kitchen, superb bathroom. And if i compare it with other hostels in New Zealand -- all this at a reasonable price! After a good night's rest we climbed Avalanche Peak, while our car still remained at the hostel. Great service!

best place we stayed. had one of the cottages just up the road. owner was really friendly and met some great people. stayed for three nights, spent one day reading by the log fire whilst it pissed it down outside, just like being at home!

Lovely, lovely people here, and it has a small, friendly atmosphere. It's clean. Staff are very helpful, and they have valuable local information on weather and good tracks. This is one of the best hostels we've stayed at!
