The Hostelz.com Review
Maggies Beach House is located on Horseshoe Bay of Magnetic Island. It is a large backpackers accommodation in a relatively new high-rise style building. The hostel features an outdoor pool and pool tables, and is just steps away from the beach. The dorm rooms are very basic, but clean and air conditioned. The kitchen is somewhat small, and the elements do not get very hot, so cooking for yourself can be a challenge. Gecko's, the connecting bar, offers good food and a backpackers dinner for a few dollars (beware of the serving size if you have an appetite!).

There are some souvenir shops along the main stretch near Maggies, and a skate park within walking distance. The atmosphere is warm, but most of the mingling goes on down on the street at the nearby pubs. Horseshoe Bay is equipped with a stinger net, so you can swim there year-round. Maggies is a $4 bus ride from the ferry.

We had two nights at this hostel in a double room and honestly, it wasn't a complete hell-hole! Yeah, there's lots of concrete and the kitchen isn't the best, But we didn't get bedbugs and the location is pretty good -- it's right on the beach. The only thing I will say is that when I ordered breakfast from the on-site cafe, it took ages to arrive! But the staff were friendly enough and it was all clean.

Sh*t! it was disgusting -- bed bugs -- dont even get me started. i was bitten alive. i hated it. And the rooms -- they were like prison cells!actually i think a prison cell would be a lot nicer! anyway steer clear of this hostal.

The location of the hostel is great. The hostel in general is ok, good sitting areas, kitchen is alright, the pans are crap to cook in though because they're all bent and the electrical heating plates take forever to heat up. Yeah it's weird about them letting you use the sleeping bag. But you know why? They desinfect the beds with chemicals (I saw it) which makes the room smell so badly! All my clothes smelled like that stuff when I left. Concrete floor is not the cosiest, true! Bathrooms are clean though.

Concrete floors in the rooms make it seem like a prison. They have postings in all the rooms about bed bugs, and say they are experts about them (though they allow one of the main carriers of these creatures -- sleeping bags). It is the only place in all my yaers of traveling all over the world I have gotten bit by them. They are rampant throughout this hostel. Great location. It could be a great place. It is for sale presently for four million dollars. Maybe the eventual, new owners will clean it up.

It can be imagined that this place was good once — but it's time some improvements were made. Everything seems old and dark and small. Rooms could quite realistically be compared to the interior of a prison cell. Just the bare essentials and that's it. It has a bar and is right next to some of the best eateries on the island — but then again you could just catch a bus from anywhere else you stay. Nice views, though — but then again the whole island is picturesque! Definitely visit Maggie — but maybe stay elsewhere!

This place isn't great, but it's not the worst. The room we got was more like a prison cell. Stone grey walls, ceilings and floor, but we had a comfy bed with some bedbugs thrown in. No power sockets in the room either. It's alright to stay here for a few nights if you don't mind the geckos, grasshoppers and some awful karaoke from the bar next door.

Terrible!!! The staff were terrible, and the room was terrible, but the island was super.

The rooms were hot and the staff were rude, and my meal was the size of a cat's bowl. I am not willing to pay 75 dollars a night for that quality of service. If you can, stay well away from this place.

Stay far, far away. I got bed bugs there. It was the worst experience of my travels. I can look back and laugh now, but it was a bloody nightmare at the time. STEER CLEAR.

Got an expensive twin room for one night. It was like a small prison cell that got too hot. It's not the best place to stay on the island, for sure.

Great place for chilling out. The rooms are a bit small, but not too bad and the place is really clean. The bus driver is off his head.

The best place I stayed in Australia! Super! Near to the beach and a crazy and fun busdriver!
