Hostelz.com's Review
Valley Hostel Lauterbrunnen is located right in the heart of the small but beautiful town of Lauterbrunnen and is a perfect choice for your stay in the Swiss Alps! Their slogan of "Come as a guest and leave as a friend" is very fitting! The owners are lovely and very helpful should you need anything. You are required to wear little slippers inside, though -- they are provided or you can bring your own.

The Location

The hostel is located a short, five-minute walk from the train station, and is very well signposted -- you can't miss it! Be careful planning your arrival, though, as reception is closed until 4 p.m. There is parking available right outside the main door if needed, as well. From the hostel it's a short walk to the shops, including a nice café and the supermarket. The train station and cable car are also in town and allow easy access to the Swiss Alps, including places like Jungfrau, Murren, and Schiltorn.

Rooms and Bathrooms

When you check in, you will be given a tap key, which is used to open your room, so the rooms are quite safe although there are no lockers provided. A few of the rooms have balconies overlooking the valley, which is beautiful. The six-bed female dorm is equipped with a small closet with shelves and hanging area, a window, and balcony. The linen is provided free of charge, although towels are extra.

The bathroom, although located on the bottom floor, is excellent. It is cleaned daily and you can tell! The showers provide hanging and changing space and the hot water is in abundance. There is also a small washroom on the third floor, so you don't have to go down two flights of stairs halfway through the night!

Common Spaces

The main common area is the dining area, which has table and chair sets, and is comfortable enough and has a reasonably good atmosphere although it's not a big party hostel. There is also a patio, which is perfect during summer and for smoking. You can see the Alps as well, which is nice. The kitchen is well equipped with all your cooking needs barring an oven and has plenty of space for you to put your food. This area is also cleaned daily (between 10 a.m. and noon), when you are unable to use the facilities -- so make sure you have cooked your breakfast before 10 a.m.! The Wi-Fi works well throughout the hostel.

Summary

This hostel is a great base for exploring the Alps and is warm and welcoming after a day of hiking or skiing!

Valley Hostel Lauterbrunnen Reviews from the Web
Hostelz.com Guest Reviews
4   Great stay -- private room The best thing about this hostel is the location -- right in the heart of the region with easy access via train, cable car! Great views from our room across the valley, could not have stayed in a more picturesque location. Everything was always clean and tidy. Could not find any major faults of the hostel -- fantastic place for all including families, couples and groups.  , age 23, Australia ()
4   Brilliant location and clean facilities Valley Hostel was fantastic. It was pristine and clean (like most things in Switzerland) and the beds were very comfortable. The kitchen facilities were the best we used in Europe (although a nonstick pan wouldn't go astray). The view from the balcony outside our dorm was incredible and the location was magical. The toilets were annoyingly down a flight of stairs and the showers were those crappy push-button-timer ones. There was too many rules and not a lot of atmosphere as there were a lot of older travelers staying. But the hostel and facilities themselves were incredibly well maintained and the staff I found quite helpful. The owner was even nice enough to lend me a rainproof jacket for my hike! Thanks! Will stay here again if in Lauterbrunnen.  , Australia ()
5   Great Place, Very New, Super Clean, Awesome Room We stayed here in a private "Deluxe" 4-person room. The hostel has 2 buildings and the one we were in was built very recently. The view from the room was fantastic. There were 2 beds on the lower level, and 2 in an upper loft area; very cool. The showers were very nice, high-pressure and lots of hot water. There were separate sink-toilet rooms so waiting was never really an issue. The kitchen in our building was perfect for what we needed, since there were very few restaurants open at night in Lauterbrunnen. We stayed here very recently. The only downside was that it was still quite cold (4-5 deg C) and coming from southern Europe, we weren't quite prepared for that. I would recommend this place to anyone, families, couples, groups. It was fantastic.  , Canada ()
5   Private room is very quite and clean. Staff is very helpful. We only stayed one night. Staff gave us detail sightseeing information and answered all our questions clearly. She was very helpful. The room was very quiet and comfortable. Location is very close to west station.  , age 65, USA ()
3   Good location Good location and the bed is clean. However, staff is not helpful and the kitchen is not big enough as there is not much choice to eat nearby at night so many people will choose to cook. Besides, only basement has bathroom is not convenient to us. By the way, the view is beautiful and the design of the hostel is quite special.  , HK ()
5   Excellent facilities and staff!! My friend and I stayed in the hostel for three nights. It is located just next to the train station which makes it convenient for travelers. The beds are very comfortable and clean. I love its laundry room which prepares space for hand-washing and hanging of wet clothes. The kitchen is also big, clean, and user-friendly. Staffs are very helpful and friendly which certainly make our trip more enjoyable. It is super worthy to enjoy holidays with Valley hostel!!!  , Hong Kong, China ()
5   Excellent My daughter and I stayed here six nights and loved it. We play to go back for a week in 2010. We stayed upstairs with a wonderful view of the Eiger, Monch, and the Jungfrau. It is within easy walking distance of the train station and entire village. There is a laundry mat and computers. Loved it. The owners were also wonderful and very helpful.  , USA ()
2   Too many rules This place is all about the rules. It is in a wonderful location but the people who run it are so fussy about what you are and arent allowed to do, it's quite stifling really. You are only allowed to cook between certain hours (not including lunch time -- this is particularly annoying), and you are only allowed to take a shower between certain hours too. You can't leave anything unattended for half a minute or the man who runs it will confiscate it. We arrived late at night starving hungry and were told we were not allowed to cook after 10 p.m. which was just plain cruel since we had traveled for hours and hours and were literally weak with hunger. There are only three mens and three womens showers, which is not enough for a hostel with this many beds. However Lauterbrunnen is a magical place and this hostel is definitely the cheapest place to stay so I guess if you want to come here you haven't much choice. It is very clean and fairly well equipped (although the kitchen does not have an oven, and there are only four hot plates between far too many people). The other main problem is that the whole place smells quite smoky because people smoke on there balconies and the smoke wafts in. If you are sensitive to cigarette smoke then I would not stay here. The people who run it are well-meaning but are not in touch with the way most other hostels are run and how relaxed things usually are. I can't say enough about how lovely the Lauterbrunnen valley is though.  , USA ()
