The Hostelz.com Review
Stamsund Vandrerhjem hostel is excellent. It has an unbeatable location on the waterfront. There is a bus stop out the front where you can catch buses to or from Leknes and Svolvaer.
Perhaps the best word to describe the hostel is "laid back." Roar, the owner, everything about the Lofotens and is full of tips and ideas of what to do in the surrounding area. Other travellers are relaxed and it is easy to kick back and relax in the sun on the deck outside.
Surprisingly for Norway, staying here won't break the bank –- although there are relatively few options when it comes to getting something to eat in Stamsund. The kitchen is relatively well-equipped and there are a number of fridges to store your food in. Make sure you have some small change to put into the machine when you want to use the showers.
The dorm rooms are in the loft and are a little chaotic -– but if they were not they would seem a little out of place. It is easy to come for a day or two and end up staying much longer.

I consider myself a nomad And this is a place where I would really love to go back to. It is definitely one of the most amazing places I've been to. And Roar ... he is THE man. — Anonymous , spain (2011-11-29)

Just Inforgettable Imagine the best place you traveler have ever been. I bet you this is far away better! After 6 years I went there, I can not forget. — Anonymous , Brazil (2011-07-20)

The best hostel in the world! Without doubts, it's the best hostel I've ever been to. The owner suddenly appears only when you need something, it's really incredible! I went twice, and in July I'm going for the third time. I think, I will spend there at least some days every summer. I suggest you to spend in this place the last days of your holiday, because what you see after this is NEVER as beautiful as here, in Justad Roar's hostel! Roar, I'm Italia, and I'm looking forward to staying at your hostel also this year, during the last week of July: See you soon! — Vanda (called Italia by Roar) from Riva del Garda - Italy , Italy (2011-06-18)

Lost for words I stayed here about six years ago. I initially planned a two-day stop. But did not leave for two weeks. I became part of the furniture, cleaning the hostel, going fishing, cooking the fish. The highlight was when Roar treated me and some others to a slice of his personal salmon supply, sawing a steak off the frozen fish, with a rusty saw. Brilliant. Oh and the aurora borealis five nights in a row! Loved it. — Nick James , British (2009-11-22)

Memories will stay with you for life! Great to read that things haven't changed. Roar was great whenever I came to stay over twenty years ago, three times in the Summer, then Christmas of 1987. I live in the U.K. now but I shall never forget the great times I had at Stamsund Hostel and exploring the landscape around it. Maybe one day I'll return. — Maresli , Austrian / French (2009-11-15)

As good as it gets I stayed here in 1984, and in reading the other comments it seems that nothing has changed. I can't tell you how good that makes me feel. I have young kids now and my hope is that they'll get to meet Roar and stay here too. — Steve Porter , USA (2009-02-06)

A Place like an Anchor where you must return to. Best place in the world to leave stress behind you. — Leon Johansen , Denmark/Switzerland (2008-07-16)

There is nothing alike my friend a I just came back from our trip to Northcape. We stayed in different Hostels in Scandinavia, but Stamsund is simply the best and Roar is a nice and funny person. We had a little cabin and wished to be there at this moment and for longer. We went fishing and caught enough Cod to cook for all the guests at Stamsund Hostel. I can recommend this place, with its marvelous surrounding from all of my heart. — Anita , Herisau Switzerland (2008-07-06)

Amazing experience I will never forget my stay there. The hostel is really messed up, don't wait for clean or tidy areas. but its the most beautiful surroundings ever, the owner is so lovely, you could be there ages and not get bored -- it's relax, it's sun, it's peace, it's magic. — Luana , Spain (2007-11-06)

The best hostel in the world. a place where you feel at home in the real sense of the word, leaving your stress and your pain away and finding the right way to go on, keeping that peace in your return to normal life for a long time. I've been there four times, and I'm planning to visit again Roar as soon as possible. I met friends from different countries and Michele (my husband) and I understood there that our friendship could become love. — alessandra (2007-02-14)

I've just returned from this Hotel and I can confirm it is not only the best in Norway but also the best experience you can expect of an Hostel.
And this is because the nice atmosphere that Roar, the mytical Roar for what I have read, inspirates in each new traveller that arrives to the Hostel and at at the same time succeeds in creating a very harmonius convivence. Roar has magic. He is not only the owner, it's a perfect host that likes his job and knows how to do it. And this surrounded by the beauty of the place, the calm of the Lofoten, but no time for boring -- just ask Roar to rent a boat and go to active fishing, or ask him for car rental. Very, very cheap. As it is so far more cheap that the Norwegian average in accommodation price. Do you want more reasons? — Enric - Spain (2006-08-24)

Although i never went to a youth hostel before, i always stay on campings, hotels, and appartments, i felt at home immediately. It's a cosy atmosphere you get in and everybody was friendly and at ease the moment they walked in. We met people from all over the world, South africans, Aussies, Europeans, Americans and one from Peru. Beautiful place also. If you are going to that direction i would certainly stay here. The owner is very friendly and very easy. Enjoy — Ronald Scholten (2006-07-25)

I am shortly leaving for the best YH in the world -- again (my fourth visit). — Jenny Browne (2006-05-31)

This Is the best youth hostel in the world and yes, world peace will start from there someday I'm sure. We were planning to stay for three days but stayed for two weeks. Roar rocks! — Johannes (2006-05-21)

Unsurpassed! I'll never forget one autumn week in 1987 filed with new friends, fishing for dinner, baking homemade bread, climbing hills, viewing the Northern Lights, and swimming! The spectacular location, cozy atmosphere, and Roars friendly mischief combine to create a unique home away from home many of us will remember dearly all our lives. — Julian (from Oz) (2006-04-03)
