The Hostelz.com Review
Allport's Hostel is not close to town. It takes about twenty to thirty minutes to walk from the hostel to town. But it is situated in a area where the night life is good, and there are lots of cafes and restaurants.

This building is very old, and looks rundown from the outside. They have extended it by adding a new section to the back with kitchen, bathrooms, and lounge area. The rooms are big and comfortable, and decorated airy and light. The bathrooms are new but there is definitely not enough bathroom facilities for the amount of rooms, and if this hostel is full this can be a problem. The toilet and shower in the older part needs some tender loving care.

There are two kitchens (although on the smaller side) and a dining area that has a cold and sterile feeling to out. The lounge area is great though! It is big and has a warm and cosy feel to it. It is divided into two areas, one side for the bigger-than-normal-size TV, and the other side just to veg out. This is definitely my favourite part of the hostel. The lounge area is far from the most of the rooms, so you don't hear the noise except for people walking on the creaky wooden floors. Other facilities includes internet, laundry, and off-street parking (although it is small). The hostel has a fun atmosphere, and the location is great for night life.

This is one of the best hostels we've stayed at. It's clean, friendly, and has a really good relaxed atmosphere. The dorms are light and breezy, the kitchen was always clean and the lounge area was comfortable. Although the hostel isn't right smack bang in the middle of things it only takes ten minutes or so to get to the harbour. The hostel is near loads of restaurants though!

This is a very nice place! Jan is extremely helpful, and booked us on a hard-to-find tour that covered both the Tasmanian Devil Conservation Park and Port Arthur in one day! The hostel itself has a very interesting history, as the building is over one hundred years old. The facilities are up-to-date and clean, and the kitchen and dining area are large and comfortable. While the staff and building are great, we did have a problem with other visitors being noisy at night and stealing our food (which is rare, so we've heard, Jan helped us stop the situation). Otherwise, this is a wonderful stay! The view is great, the staff is helpful and the facilities are unbeatable. Also, if you're lucky, Gorgeous the household cat may even make an appearance during your time there!

I stayed in this hostel with my friends in Oct. 2005. The staff are helpful whenever you need any information. The city center is extremely quiet after 7 p.m. and there are not many places to hang out. But the location of Allport's was good, as you can find many restaurants or cafes open till late night just across the street within walking distance. The kitchen is big and clean, and the common room is comfortable for watching TV or reading books. Overall this hostel is comfortable to stay in because you won't find it noisy and it's not a party place like some other hostels. The hostel guests are nice and everybody will make the place neat and clean after using the facilities. Great place to stay.

I had a great time in Hobart over New Year and would definitely recommend this hostel. It's not a party place, but is in a great position on Elizabeth Street, which is full of bars and restaurants. The kitchen space is decent, as even when the place was full it was possible to cook and eat without too much hassle. Bathrooms nothing special, but clean and well looked after. The management was very friendly and genuinely helpful. The only downside was that the walls to our double room were paper-thin to the point of being able to hear the guy next door snoring away. Overall though, a good value, clean and secure.

This place is clean and friendly with helpful, knowledgeable staff. It was my best stay in Oz.
