Description

The Hostelz.com Review

Silverfern Backpackers is a big city hostel located some ten minutes' walk from Auckland's city center. The big three-story building on Hobson Street offers plenty of accommodation options and is a good budget choice for the backpacker pocket. It offers free unlimited Wi-Fi, lockers, and laundry service, as well as some indoor entertainment options like pool, foosball, or a TV room.

The Location

The hostel is located ten minutes' walking away from the city center and Auckland's main facilities. Nevertheless, there are supermarket, food, and general needs options just around the hostel all along Hobson Street -- one of Auckland's main avenues, although it does not get too busy in general.

Rooms and Bathrooms

There are both bunk-bed dormitories and private rooms (although no en-suite options are available), most of which are mainly located on the upper second level of the building. In general, the dormitories are long kind of narrow rooms with bunk beds located along the left and right sides of it. They provide average mattresses with accessible power sockets, although not too much space to leave guests' baggage. There are bathrooms in all three levels, with two showers located on the underground floor and three on the second floor.

Common Spaces

Right after the main key-locked door passed the lobby, there is a big hall room with several sofas for the guests to rest and meet with fellow travelers. Located on the ground floor as well, there is a pretty big kitchen with three stoves, two sinks, and several fridges, conveniently connected to an "American-style" dining room with four tables. Right next to it, you can find a TV room with no more than a dozen DVD film options for guests to watch, with three sofa lines arranged in some cinema-like design (it might as well work as a chilling-out room to read or talk when nobody is making use of the facility). Finally, on the underground floor, there are free-to-use pool and foosball tables.

Summary

Although Silverfern might not do it for the most quality-seeking guests, it is indeed a good hostel for budget backpackers to stay and have a good time with other travelers. At a very competitive price, its big indoor common spaces are quite handy to pass the time while not exploring the city, especially when Auckland's weather turns against your tourist ambitions.

Good value, big hostel
Location is nice, so is the staff, and it is pretty cheap. You get 30 minutes of free WiFi everyday, the kitchen is furnished. Overall it is good, except it is pretty busy, don't expect it to be really quiet.

Silverfern Backpackers is one of the cheaper places to stay in Auckland. When we were there it had newly opened and was lacking charm and coziness; it is more of a sterile block similar to a hospital, but all new, modern, and, most of all, well priced. The Location The hostel is located twenty minutes' walk from the port and about ten minutes from the Skytower, the inter-city bus terminal, and most other attractions. Two big Chinese supermarkets as well as a grocery shop, restaurants, bars, and the police station are close by. Rooms and Bathrooms The dorms are long, narrow, stuffed with beds, and very plain. Sockets can be found next to some of the beds. Lockers are available at the reception only, the rooms therefore are very messy and hard to clean. The little tables and chairs between the bed seem like a cute idea at first, but as they are buried under people's luggage and clothes, they are of not much use. Further the rooms are lit by bright neon, which, especially in the upper bunks, makes it hard to sleep without a blindfold. People don't care and leave the lights on overnight or just don't expect them to be that bright when they first walk in and switch them on. The bathrooms are very modern and clean, but a few more sinks could be needed when the place is fully booked. Common Spaces The TV lounge consists of a few rows of diner's seats, again creating a rather cold atmosphere; the little common area next to the reception, on the other hand, looks friendly and invites guests to meet and hang out. During our stay, Wi-Fi was not working and we missed the free breakfast (the night shift gave us the wrong times). Other guests informed us that it wasn't really worth getting up for anyway. Summary This hostel is another case of "you get what you pay for." It's not perfect or the place where you want to spend your holidays, but it's good enough for a couple of nights. Green might not be the most inviting colour to paint the hallways, but once they put up some pictures it might get a bit friendlier.

Very nice hostel with a lot of cool stuff.
Hey I stayed just 1 night with my friends end of February 2012, but I really liked it. The hostel has a big movie room, which is organized like a small cinema with a 2 meter screen. The kitchen is big and pretty good equipt and has a nice eating area. The lodge has another TV and some magazines to read. It's a nice place to relax and chat a little bit with fellow guests. But the best were definitely our crazy English roommates. We had just tons of fun and got some got insights about NZ.
