The Hostelz.com Review
Jazz on the City is a modern, mid-rise hostel conveniently located one block from Ninety-Sixth Street Station on the Upper West Side. Central Park and dozens of well-regarded shops, restaurants, and grocery stores are all within walking distance. It is part of the "Jazz" hostel chain and thus has a well-connected reception desk and experienced staff. It offers traditional bunked hostel rooms as well as twin-bedded private rooms with en-suites. The hostel's atmosphere is average and unremarkable, but also predictable and professional. The guests are typical international backpackers on extended worldwide journeys.

The newly renovated rooms are impeccably clean and brightly painted and feature in-window air conditioning units (which are loud but powerful). Each room has a small flat screen television with remote. Bathrooms have showers with tubs and plenty of hot water. Towels are provided, but soap is not. The guest rooms have very thin muslin-like draperies, which offer little to no privacy. Each door has a key-card lock, a deadbolt, and a safety chain.

Jazz on the City does not have an elevator, but the main staircase is wide and accessible. There is no secure luggage storage, but because the reception desk is always manned, they will allow you to pile up luggage at the base of the staircase for short periods (for a few hours while waiting for your room to be ready).

The common area is a large combined laundry-internet-eating-phone room with an adjacent rooftop deck. Although the room has good utility, it suffers from poor housekeeping at times. The area seems to be destroyed daily due to the sheer volume of usage. Trash piles up on the floor and unattended laundry piles up in the corner. The room hosts a miniature fridge and microwave as well as two pay phones. The rooftop deck is wide and spacious and sports a decent view of the surrounding neighborhood and a BBQ area. Unfortunately, it tends to be used as a gathering place for smokers rather than a social hub.

The common area on the top floor has two computers for prepaid internet access. A car service website can be accessed at no cost in order to arrange transportation around town or to the airports. It is important to note that New York City taxis cannot be prearranged -- they must be hailed from the street.

Overall, Jazz on the City is a clean, reliable hostel in a convenient location. For those visiting in the hot and humid summer, the air conditioned rooms are a huge plus. The hostel's proximity to three subway lines makes it a great base for exploring the city. Regular hostel-goers will appreciate the clean and newly renovated individual rooms and forgive the poor condition of the common areas (or just avoid them altogether).

Good!
I spent nine days at Jazz on the City this september and I really liked it. It was cheap and we had everything we needed. Hot water, a bed to sleep in, a toilet and so on. I could really recommend this place to anyone going to NYC. One bad thing though is that they have neither a refrigerator, nor a kitchen. And you can't wash your clothes. And they made us switch rooms two times -- quite annoying. But except from that it was perfect. A good and cheap hostel. So, if you're on a budget, this is the place for you.

Amazing location right next to a subway station, and the Upper West Side is a nice area of Manhattan. Staff are friendly enough. Everything was fairly new and clean. Rooms are tiny -- they cram three sets of bunks into a room that really should be a four person. the windows are not double glazed so you get woken at 7 a.m. by the traffic outside, and there are these very flimsy white things as curtains so the light streams in sp I'd recommend an eye mask. I know our room is en-suite but is actually a big pain because it means you can only use the bathroom one at a time so you can wait for ages -- much better to have communal bathrooms because you have to wait for less time. The common are is very cramped -- in fact the whole place feels like a doll's house. Oh and you have to walk up five/six flights of stairs and it's very irritating after a day or so, it makes you not want to go to your room. This place is perfectly clean so you don't need to worry if you are booked to stay here it's just I think there are nicer places to stay in NYC.

This hostel was atrocious, the toilet system was literally crap, and the dormitory was unsafe! One of the beds had a electricity box right next to it! Very disappointed.

I had mixed feelings about this hostel. Overall, it was fine, but there were a few things that somewhat disturbed me during my stay. There was no hot water for over 24 hours, and none of the employees had any information on whether or not a repairman had been called or when it may be fixed. There was no heat for two days (in January...yes, it was FREEZING). The heat was "fixed" on my last day there, but I never felt a difference in the temperature. On a better note, the hostel is located on the upper west side (a great area). It is only one block from the subway, and surrounded by great restaurants, shops, anything you could ever want..... Although the staff could not offer a good explanation for the heat/hot water situation, they were overall nice people..... There is a rooftop terrace, as well as a lounge with computers, a television, and a microwave (NOT a kitchenette like they claim...just a microwave and a tiny tiny tiny tiny refrigerator that is already full of stuff). The lounge/terrace is a great place to meet other people staying at the hostel....in fact, this is where I met TONS of friends that I still keep in touch with! If you take a shower for too long, the steam causes the fire alarm to go off.....I learned this the hard way (2 days in a row). They do have security lockers in the room, which I appreciated. $4 will get you a locker for the entire length of your stay. I would definitely stay there again..... ***note: this didn't happen to me, but to one of my friends staying at the hostel after i had already gone home: her cell phone and some other things were missing from her bag. when she reported it, all the front desk did was ask her to keep it a secret.

Unfortunately our booking at this hostel had been mixed up and we did not get the twin room we booked until a day after we arrived. We had to check out and back in again, having to repack after our arrival night. The heating system in both rooms leaked and made the loudest noises I have ever heard all night long for a week! It was freezing but we were told that there were no clean spare blankets or towels. When I sat on my bed it collapsed as it only had three legs! When I told the staff at reception I was given a tin of paint to prop it up with (and unfortunately no hint of apology)! The reception staff at the hostel did not know the area particularly well and actually told us the wrong place to go to see the halloween parade. They didn't seem to understand the computer system they use very well either, and couldn't add up our bill. On a more positive note the cleaning staff at the hostel must be very good because the rooms and bathroom were spotless. Our room had a hairdryer and a mirror too. The internet access on the sixth floor is good as is the roof terrace. I emailed the company to complain about aspects of our stay but as yet have not received a reply.
