The Hostelz.com Review
Capel-y-Ffin Youth hostel is on a converted farm in Black Mountain's Llanthony Valley, in the north-east of Brecon Beacons National Park. It is the highest youth hostel in England and Wales and it really is in the middle of nowhere. To get there you really need to drive, unless you are walking the long-distance Offa's Dyke footpath, or cycling on of the many routes in the area. There is no public transportation available and the road is unsuitable for coaches. Parking is also very restricted, with only five parking spaces at the hostel itself. Minibuses and cars that do make the journey to find the parking area full are requested to unload and then park in a lay-by nearby. However, don't let this put you off, the remoteness of this hostel its definitely part of its charm.

The main buildings includes dorm rooms for 8, 6, 4 and 2 people, a dining room, washing facilities, and a self catering kitchen, while the converted barn across the courtyard offers beds for 18-20 people and has its own washing facilities. It offers a great option for those who want to get away from it all. It has no TV or mobile reception although there is a payphone. Email to the hostel take a while to answer as the manger has to go to the village to check the messages, so if you want to make a reservation you are best to ring them.

The meals here are fantastic -- which is just as well as the nearest pub is several miles away. The menu is wide and varied and all sorts of dietary requirement can be catered for. Starters are around £2, main course range from £5.50-7 and sweets are around £2. The daily specials are highly recommended and you could easily be mistaken for thinking you where in a restaurant. Breakfast is £3.40 and packed lunches cost £3.80. Soft and alcoholic drinks are also available, wine is £2 a glass with a bottle costing £8.50, beer is £2.50 a can. Free tea and coffee is available all day.

The hostel offers activity weekends around various themes these include horse riding, batik, guided walks, rug making, navigation skills, wine and walking weekends, and dry stone walling. Books, board games, and outdoor games are available to borrow as are walking routes and maps.
