The Hostelz.com Review
HI - Koblenz - Jugendherberge Festung Ehrenbreitstein, Jugendgästehaus Koblenz/R is a pretty cool place to stay -- it's located in an old fort at the top of a hill overlooking the whole city!
The Location
To get there take bus #8 or 9 to Ehrenbreitstein, walk left along the main road, and after a hundred meters, take the path to your right and climb up the hill. On the way, there will be a guard you will have to pass, just tell him or her you're heading to the hostel. There is also the option of taking the train straight to the Ehrenbreitstein train station and calling a taxi -- while you will have to pay, it is significantly easier than dragging baggage up the hill. During daylight hours, there is a chairlift going to the top of the mountain (sesselbahn). This hostel is located across the Rhine from the city center of Koblenz. There is a bridge across the river, but it's quite the hike form the hostel to the city center.
Rooms and Bathrooms
Checking in might prove difficult, as no one seems to know when check-in closes. For this reason, we suggest arriving in the afternoon for check-in. This hostel is actually pretty cool, being in an old fort. The rooms stretch out pretty far from reception, so it might be quite a walk down the corridor. Sheets for the beds are provided but you have to make the bed yourself. The dorm we stayed in consisted of four sets of wood bunk beds; one metal bunk bed that looked like it was about to collapse; and one single, non-bunk bed as well as some lockers and a table with some chairs. All in all, it is a pretty big room.
There is also an ensuite bathroom with a toilet, shower, and sink, which isn't exactly dirty, just old. There is also a bathroom on the hall with a few toilets, multiple showers, and sinks. There is only one key to the room, so the door is constantly unlocked to let people enter and leave as they please. The curfew is midnight.
Common Spaces
The main common area is the room where breakfast is served. Breakfast is included with the price of a bed and consists of tea, coffee, juice, breads, and some fruit served until 9:30. There are also some tables and chairs in the check-in area to sit and play games or use the computer. The hostel doesn't list it as an amenity, but you can pick up free wireless. There is also free tea or other refreshments available for purchase from the reception counter. There really isn't a very friendly atmosphere in the hostel -- most guests seem to be families and they keep pretty much to themselves.
Summary
This hostel doesn't really have very much of an atmosphere -- it's very quiet and there are a lot of families. It isn't really conveniently located either. It's at the outside of the city, across the river from where everything is going on, but it has an awesome view of the city from just outside the front door. It's also pretty cool to be staying in an old fort and to ride a chairlift up the mountain when there's no snow.

A long time ago ... I stayed at this hostel in 1995, so I'm sure my review is hardly relevant -- the staff were jerks, but I'm sure they have changed in the past 15 years! Anyway, was just in Koblenz the other day and took a brand new cable car straight up to the castle from just south of the Eck -- far easier than the bus I remember taking up there. I think it was €8 (return) for the cable car. The hostel (and entire fortress) is closed for renovations until December 2010. — Anonymous , Canadian (2010-09-02)

Wow! What atmosphere! this was the greatest stay of my european trip! we stayed a couple nights and had a ball touring around. what atmosphere and history! being a teacher, i highly recommend this hostel. — jonathan cates , USA (2009-03-21)

Average. alright, first things first -- no one mentioned that the hostel was up a steep forty-meter hike uphill. with a fifteen-kilogram pack on, it's not so much fun, plus direction to the actual building weren't the best, have fun wondering around the rundown ruins they call the fortress to find out which building is the actual hostel. the view was alright, but koblenz is not in the prettiest part of the rhine. (can you see that nuclear power plant in the distance?). getting to the actual town of koblenz involves either a ferry ride or a ten-minute train ride on a train that comes once every hour. other than that, the hostel is a typical HI hostel -- it's clean, breakfast is provided, the building is overrun by school kids, there's polite but unfriendly staff, and it lacks some amenities like kitchen and laundry. the fortress isn't heated too well, either. — Kathy , Canada (2008-06-12)

"Viel Spass!" -- as someone told me at the bottom of the fortress to climb to the Hostel. Rather comfortable, especially the lounge and the bar ("bistro"). At the very beginning of September 2004, when I stayed, the hostel was nearly empty -- few opportunities to meet people. Good french speaking staff! Rather cold atmosphere but the original place worths to stay. Visit the war museum nearby. — Jéronimo , France (2007-04-05)
I stayed here in May of 2006 for three nights. I was pretty psyched to see this place. I'm afraid I was quite let down. On the positive, this hostel being in the fortress creates really good atmosphere and is an amazing place to unwind in the evenings. The views of Deutsches Eck across the Rhine, and Koblenz at night, are etched into my mind. The fortress itself is well eerily lit at night and can be fun to wander around in without anyone around. The hostel had a reasonably clean washroom and showers, which is important to me. In short, this was a great place to unwind with a beer after a long day. It's worth staying here just to spend one evening enjoying the view. Unfortunately however, this hostels unique feature is also its unique flaw. Climbing the huge hill with your backpack on is tiring no matter how fit you are, and the walk back each night loses it's charm quickly. The location is actually quite out of the way and it's about an hour to or from the city by foot (Koblenz buses are good, but I prefer to walk usually). But those long walks are much worse when you're sick, which I was, and for that I blame the hostel. The rooms in this converted old fortress are damp, smelly, and cold, with zero circulation, ensuring someone in the room is bound to open the window wide open after you've gone to sleep. I woke up each morning with a painfully sore throat and chills, and was sore all day long (this from someone accustomed to camping and sleeping in tents in the cold). Perhaps it was just one area of the hostel, particular to the room I stayed in, but my mornings here were trying. The icing on the cake was the older German guys who were smoking in the room during the day, and drinking there late into the evenings. Like any DJH hostel in Germany, this place is 95% school children and not a great place to hang out and meet people if you're a twenty-something. Although when I did meet people, we instantly had something to talk -- how nice it was to see another backpacker in this place. The breakfast here is decent, but you have to beat the kids and get there before 8 a.m., or it'll all be gone. Oh, and be prepared to get kicked from your table occasionally, as at the time I was there all the tables were reserved for various schools. This is actually another great opportunity to meet the other adult travelers, as you are shoo'd away from tables and end up opting to squat together, to create strength in numbers. Two more peeves of mine with this place are that there's no security (ironic, as it's a fortress) and no internet. While the latter is to be expected given the location, the lack of any lockers I find silly. All that having been said, it's this or a hotel when you're in Koblenz, which is a great place to visit (day trip to Berg Eltz!). Given the costs involved, I guess I'd still have to recommend this place as your best bet. Though this review might seem moot to some, I just want people to know what they're perhaps in for. — Scott from Canada (2006-09-12)

I highly recommend this hostel to anyone traveling along the Rhine. We stayed here in September 2005 and really enjoyed our time at Jugendherberge Festung Ehrenbreitstein. Although there was a school group at the hostel during our stay we didn't really notice because we were in a small room that was located in separate building. Pros include great view of the Rhine (nice sunset), trials for running or walking, big breakfast, nicely priced. Cons include getting to the hostel -- you need to hike up a hill (not that bad, just be prepared!), the drain in our shower was a bit sketchy, but work! — PM (2006-05-23)

Wicked hostel in a huge old fortress overlooking the Rhine and Mosel Rivers, with a great view of Koblenz. You are actually sleeping in the rooms of the fortress...really cool. The staff are friendly and nice, and speak great English. This hostel also had one of the best breakfasts I have ever had at a hostel! Highly recommended, although there is nothing to do in Koblenz itself. — Anonymous (2004-07-05)
