HI - Saarburg - Jugendherberge Saarburg/Saar Hostel in Saarburg … Excellent hostel, extremely clean. Wonderful breakfast and great outside area for kids to play, groups to talk, and a great view of the castle lit up at night. Very friendly and convenient. Wake up to beautiful scenic views of the river and countryside in the morning. Absolutely beautiful, clean, and welcoming. Great for families!
HI - Traben-Trarbach - Mittelmosel-Jugendherberge, Jugendgästehaus Traben-Trarba in Traben-Trarbach … Our family of five stayed here in June when we came this way to visit the Castle Eltz in the Mosel river valley. We were happy with this hostel it was clean and comfortable lots of storage for your stuff and the bathroom was also quiet clean and conveniently right in our family room! This place had great storage we could easily have stayed here comfortably for a week or so. They also had a great dinner that you could purchase for very little and breakfast. It was a fantastic deal and highly recommended! They also had a nice bar and cafe downstairs that we went to as well. The Mosel river valley is a wonderful place to visit and this is the place to stay! Just make sure that when you walk here you take the river path as it is the shortest path to the hostel!
HI - Bacharach - Jugendherberge Burg Stahleck Hostel in Bacharach … Stahleck was the first hostel I had ever stayed at was by far the best experience I have ever had in hostels. It's located on the top of a cliff in a refurbished 14th Century castle, it is a 15-30 minute hike up to the hostel. However beautiful views of the Rhine and unique ruins of arches and a chapel make the climb less of daunting task, but trust me if you are out of shape in any way you are hestitant to want to go back down once you make to the top. The hostel itself has numerous private, family, group, and single sex dorms all with attached bathrooms, which are extremely clean. There is a game room, a small cafe/breakfast room with reasonable priced food and local wines and beers, and a courtyard with breathtaking views of the village below and the Rhine. I would go back in a heartbeat and recommend it highly.
HI - Diez - Grafenschloss-Jugendherberge, Jugendgästehaus Diez/Lahn Hostel in Diez … I was here in January '07. This recently remodeled castle-hostel is tops. You can see the castle towering over the town as you approach Diez on the train. Spotless, pleasant rooms with hotel-quality mattresses and private baths. Cafe-bar is spectacular for a hostel -- well done, nice sound system, Kolsch beer for 1.20. The breakfast buffet is excellent as well, served in a beautifully appointed dining room. It's so well put together that it's hard to believe it was once a dark, damp, moldy old castle. It's about one kilometer from the Diez train station. If you always wanted to stay in a castle, maybe this is the place. Almost no one was there at this time of year, but I'm sure that will change. Beware of booking during the school year (which goes through mid-July) as hordes of German school kids on week-long outings will undoubtedly be there to tear the place up and make your stay hellish.
Hostel Schwerbach in Frankfurt Hahn … I found this hostel to be beyond my expectations — it's set in really picturesque surroundings. The staff were really friendly, warm and helpful. We got picked up from the airport in the blue minibus run by the staff and dropped off at the airport again — this made our stay so much easier. Even though it is 80 miles from Frankfurt there are excellent transport links from Frankfurt Hahn airport to Frankfurt and also other major cities within the Hunsruck region and other areas of Germany. As the hostel is only 10 minutes from Frankfurt Hahn Airport this makes a great base for exploring the surrounding areas. There is also breakfast offered for a little extra — a simple but tasty breakfast that definitely fills you up. I would definitely come back here again. If you are looking for a short break in simple accommodation in great surroundings that is great value for money, I would recommend this hostel.
HI - Koblenz - Jugendherberge Festung Ehrenbreitstein, Jugendgästehaus Koblenz/R in Koblenz … Wicked hostel in a huge old fortress overlooking the Rhine and Mosel Rivers, with a great view of Koblenz. You are actually sleeping in the rooms of the fortress...really cool. The staff are friendly and nice, and speak great English. This hostel also had one of the best breakfasts I have ever had at a hostel! Highly recommended, although there is nothing to do in Koblenz itself.
Wanderlust Hostel in Mainz … Great Hosts, very helpful and pleasant. It was also very cheap with a free breakfast! The location very handy next to a train station. Borrowed bikes the next day and followed a very easy route into Mainz. Lovely stay off the beaten track.
Hille's Hostel in Trier … We stayed here for two nights in June and had a really good time. The hostel is in a good location and clean. The people running the hostel are very laid back and there are no curfews, etc. No complaints from us.
HI - Trier - Römerstadt-Jugendherberge, Jugendgästehaus Trier Hostel in Trier … I stayed at this hotel twice many years ago. It was quiet, very well kept (some of the best rooms I had in all my trips) and right on the edge of the river.
HI - Dreisbach - Jugendherberge an der Saarschleife, Jugendgästehaus Dreisbach H in Mettlach … The food is not so good, but the rooms make it better.
HI - St. Goar - Loreley-Jugendherberge St. Goar/Rhein Hostel in St. Goar … I visited St. Goar last summer (2003). I was heading to Zurich, but wanted to stay at one of the places on the banks of the Rhine river. St. Goar wasn't bad. It is a small, touristy village between Koblenz and Mainz. The hostel was pretty cheap (like most of the German ones) and the inclusive breakfast was great! The bathrooms were all right, and the rooms I have seen all have bunkbeds. The hostel (close to the railway station) itself is situated on a hill so you have to climb a little. The view of the river is quite nice! I would go back if needed.
HI - Mainz - Rhein-Main-Jugendherberge Hostel in Mainz … I stayed here because there was a trade-fair in Frankfurt and everything was booked solid. This hostel is very far from the town and hard to find when you get off the bus. The signs are not easy to locate and are very vague. When I finally found the place there were six older men (workers?) standing outside the front door. They laughed at me and made lewd comments in German when they saw that I was a female travelling alone. The staff is not incredibly friendly or professional, and not everyone speaks English. On the plus side, there is a nice view of the river, the breakfast is good, the hostel has a bar that serves snacks, it is clean, and there is a large city park adjacent to the place. The bad points are it is hard to find, there is no internet, far from the city, staff is not professional, and the coffee machine eats your money.
