The Hostelz.com Review
De Bos Guest Farm is one of the best value options for visitors to Montagu, a picturesque historic town which contains several museums and offers superb nearby hiking and rock-climbing possibilities as well as “tractor tours” on the popular Route 62 between Robertson and Swellendam and within a day’s journey to or from Cape Town. There are also mineral springs and wine-tasting in the vicinity.

The Location

De Bos Guest Farm is located at 8 Brown Street close to the center of the scenic town of Montagu. It is approached via one of the principal streets, Bath Street, where the imposing Dutch Reformed Church and the Montagu Visitor Center are situated. Shortly after passing the Visitor Center the street changes its name to Brown Street and fords the Keisie River. De Bos Guest Farm is on the left. For those who are reluctant to ford the river, for example during periods of flooding, there is a bridge at Mill Street two blocks to the right. Intercity buses from Cape Town stop at Ashton, where there is a shared minibus service to Montagu, or travelers can contact the hostel to arrange pickup. There is ample free parking on the property.

Rooms and Bathrooms

The sleeping accommodation consists of shared multi-bed rooms; doubles, some of them self-catering; a bungalow; tent camping; and a large, windowless converted stable now used as a mixed-sex dorm and incorporating a small kitchen with two gas rings. The former animal stalls have been converted into two-bed alcoves, and all the beds are of the single, non-bunk type. It is not usually locked.

There are two mixed-sex toilets and two mixed-sex showers shared by campers and occupants of the converted stable, which could become congested at peak periods. It is difficult to use the showers without flooding the bathroom. The showers are heated by gas, which has an unpleasant smell. There is space to change in the shower area, and there are hooks for clothes and soap dishes. All the accommodation is spotlessly clean.

Common Spaces

There is a large campers’ kitchen/dining room, which contains two refrigerators but curiously no stove; and a separate, shared kitchen/dining room containing two gas rings, a refrigerator, a table and chairs, and some storage shelves. Apart from exterior common areas, which includes a play area for children, there is a large covered space exposed to the elements on two sides and furnished with picnic benches. There is no book exchange, no TV room, and no room with sofas where “stable” dorm residents can relax. This is a quiet, non-smoky hostel, popular with families and a wide range of age groups. The owners live in the farmhouse and are friendly, unobtrusive, and trusting.

Summary

De Bos Guest Farm is one of many pleasant, inexpensive options for those seeking to break their journey between Cape Town and points further east and is recommended.
