The Hostelz.com Review
Bob's Bunkhouse is a relaxed, friendly place. It's not a party hostel, but for those who are a bit older or prefer to just mellow out and relax.

The Location

The hostel is about ten minutes from the international airport (depending on traffic). It is relatively easy to find from the airport, and if you rent a vehicle, the hostel does have parking in an enclosed area. The hostel provides airport pickups and dropoffs and is also part of the "Baz Bus" network in South Africa, a facility that picks up and drops off at various backpackers across the country. This hostel is not super close to shops, but it is in walking distance. Also a secondhand bookstore is "up the road." Walking at night is not advised.

Rooms and Bathrooms

The hostel has two mixed dorms, a four-bed and six-bed dorm. They are adjacent to one another, with a door that separates them. There are good locks and security gates at night for these dorms. The two dorms share one bathroom with two toilets, two showers, and two basins. The bathrooms are very clean, and look quite new, with clothes hooks and soap dishes, just not enough space to change. There is also a double en-suite, double shared bathroom, and a cottage available.

Common Spaces

The communal kitchen is very small, with only a two-plate stove (no oven) and small working space. There is enough utensils if needed for your own cooking, but you have to ask the lady that runs the hostel as it is from her kitchen. She is very helpful. The communal fridge in the lounge. This hostel provides meals on request. The lounge is cozy, with comfortable sofas and satellite TV. A huge plus point of this hostel is the big area. It is between the dorms and lounge, kitchen, and pool. It is open, yet has a roof. It is cool in summer and can be cold in winter, but it is a fun spot to hang out and chat. This is a subdued but social hostel, for the young and old.

Summary

This is a very homey hostel, with helpful staff. Its plus point is the proximity to the Johannesburg International Airport. The managers are on the older side, yet young at heart. It's a great place to meet different people of varied ages, or just to sit back and read.
