Johannesburg … One thing I'd recommend beyond a doubt is taking a 'walking safari'. Camping in tents and huts with no restrictions for the animals to stroll into camp. An experienced tracker leads the way following paw prints. Because of his knowledge of the animal's instincts, we didn't feel threatened at any time. It makes for good close up photography and videos.

Diamond Diggers Backpackers in Johannesburg … This hostel is a great place to stay. The staff are really friendly and the hot tub in the bar provides much entertainment!! Food is available, as are shuttles to nearby Eastgate Mall, the Apartheid Museum, and the airport/bus station, for a very small fee. Free pickup is also available from where you are arriving.

Brown Sugar Backpackers in Johannesburg … Having visited the place, I now realize what English George means when he talks about "being pursued by the cleaners" at breakfast time! Why can't they use their mops before or after breakfast, or is their nonsense part of the fun? Yes, and Ian is grumpy, usually because his girlfriend has been in someone else's bed when she has been up in Yeoville!!

Brown Sugar Backpackers in Johannesburg … I stayed at Brown Sugar for 3 nights and I absolutely looooooved it! I had booked a 16-bed dorm and I expected the worst, what I found was the best dorm ever. There were only 4-5 people sleeping in the dorm at a time, most beds were not even bunk beds, so the room was huge. The bathroom was huge as well and worth a couple of photos. The hostel is big with several areas to relax, including a pool area. A nice dinner is offered every night. There is a free airport pick-up or drop-off, which is worth a lot in Johannesburg. The area is pretty safe for Johannesburg. Very good value for money, thanks for a lovely stay!!!

Rockey's of Fourways Backpackers in Johannesburg … When I was on holiday from the UK about two and a half years ago, this place was recommended to me, as my mates were off somewhere and not getting back before my plane took off a few days later. I stayed here for three days, and have never felt more comfortable in a hostel in my life. Take it from me, someone who has lived in hostels in Israel, London, Bangkok, New York and all over the UK, this is one amazing little place! I now have a home out here in South Africa or I would be living at this hostel full time! Remember me, Colleen?

Rockey's of Fourways Backpackers in Johannesburg … This hostel is very good. It is chilled and in a good location. I especially like the hammocks around the pool. I would definitely return. Really friendly staff who make you feel at home.

Africa Centre Airport Guest Lodge & Travel Centre in Johannesburg … I had a really great time at Africa Centre. I stayed in one of the en suite rooms with satellite TV. I really enjoyed my time. The people were very friendly and the accommodation was very clean. I always think that what you pay for, that's what you get. I also enjoyed a good tour to Kruger and a lot of fun nights in the bar.

Brown Sugar Backpackers in Johannesburg … I was there in 1999, a really nice house, nice guys, Ian and Hans were totally friendly. Nice staff. I wish I go back soon.

Sleek Backpackers in Johannesburg … This is one of the cleanest places we've stayed at. It has really nice dorms and good beds. The staff are awesome. They will help you with everything. The dogs will not go near you if you don't want them to. I have nothing but good things to say about this place. Come and experience it!

Africa Centre Airport Guest Lodge & Travel Centre in Johannesburg … This hostel is lovely! The room in which I stayed was very beautiful and clean, and the hostel is located in a very rich and secure area of Johannesburg, away from the city center and close to the airport. And the safari I booked with them was simply perfect!

1322 Backpackers International in Pretoria … Safe area and a lovely place, very clean. They get the best possible prices/quality for car hire, tours locally and to Kruger and other places. Staff were very friendly and helpful. It has everything you want/need. Great showers with hot water all day! It's very close to the embassies. It's the best backpackers I have stayed in during six months in South Africa.

Diamond Diggers Backpackers in Johannesburg … Hi there guys. Well, I stayed here back in April, only for a few nights, and I was on my own but all the dudes made me feel very welcome. It's a great place and has a good atmosphere. I'll be back there soon to pick up my Jack's Jungle Juice from the bar, as I'm sure it's too strong for them!!

Bob's Bunkhouse in Johannesburg … This is a home away from home for me. I have stayed here on quite a few occasions and Bob and Joan are by far the best hosts! Great beds and brilliant service.
