Moonlight Backpackers Reviews

Moonlight Backpackers is a very peaceful place with a few impalas and wildebeests roaming around on a ranch that is a part of the backpackers' property. This is a great opportunity to see those animals up close without spending a fortune on a game drive. There is no reception, but guests are welcomed by the owners, who live in one of the buildings.

The Location

Driving on the highway from Pretoria on the way to Hartbeespoort, it's easily found, but while traveling at night it might be difficult to see the sign on the crossing, because it’s hidden on the side of the road. Inside of the property, there is a parking lot set for at least six cars. Travelers without a car can use local taxis going from the main road, about a half a mile away from the place.

Rooms and Bathrooms

The dorm room is suitable for three to four people, since one of the beds is double. Outside doors have a classic lock, while the toilet situated inside of the room can be locked only by a handle. The dorm and a bathroom are separated by a wall, but the ceiling is situated a bit above, which -- combined with the height of the building -- takes a lot out of the toilet's privacy. The long and narrow bathroom with comfortable shower gives enough space to change, but is equipped with only one hook. In the room, there are few bedside tables and a dressing table, which can be used as a desk (especially since the one power point in the room is situated above it). Unfortunately, there are no lockers in the room, and even though there is a fan for summer time, the lack of heater can be a problem during winter.

Common Spaces

The kitchen and chilling zone is situated in a separate building, offering a wide range of utensils, pots, pans, and plates for those who like to cook, as well as a stove and BBQ place. It's suitable for large groups of people and provides tables for eating and couches close to the fireplace for reading books from nearby bookcase. There is no place provided for luggage storage or outside activities, although for those who are looking for a quiet place to rest, it might be a perfect spot.

Summary

It’s a silent place offering the guest a place to rest and renew, but lacks space to interact with others. It's equipped on a basic level, with internet access only for emergencies. Without a reception, there is a problem with getting basic information, local tips, and even check-out. It's perfect for a one-night stay, but not necessarily for longer holidays.

Description

Moonlight Backpackers is situated on a 21 hectares property close to Hartbeespoort. Pretoria is about half an hour from us and from the Airport in Johannesburg to Moonlight Backpackers is one hour's drive. There is wildlife on the property and two hides to have a look at the animals when they are coming in to eat and drink. You can also have a barbeque (braai) while looking at the animals. We have a fully equipped kitchen with DSTV (satellite tv) and a pool table. Most of our rooms are en-suite. We have a small dorm with 6 built-in single beds and no bunk beds. Between 10 and 15 kilometres from Moonlight Backpackers are many restaurants. The large arts and craft market is also only 15 kilometres from Moonlight Backpackers. De Wildt Cheetah Centre is two kilometres from Moonlight Backpackers and Pilanesberg and Sun City are one hour's drive. About ten minutes drive from us are the Elephant Sanctuary and the Bushbaby Sanctuary with many different species of monkeys running around between the people.
