Firehouse Hostel is one of the friendliest hostels in which we've ever stayed.

The Location

Firehouse Hostel is located downtown, where everything happens! The infamous Sixth Street is just around the corner, offering some of the city's iconic nightlife, live music, souvenir shops -- you name it, it's all right here.

Rooms and Bathrooms

Some of the rooms are more basic than others, but even the most basic ones are not too bad. It does smell a bit sweaty sometimes when the room is full, but overall we can't complain. The rooms are pretty small with not much space to move around; bulky items must go in the locker boxes under the beds, as there is almost no space to move. The pillows and mattresses must be pretty old, as they seem to sink and they aren't very fluffy, but hey, maybe that's why you get two pillows! The nice thing is that linen and towels are provided free of charge. There is also a reading lamp for every bed, which is convenient. The bathrooms are shared, a few on each floor so there wasn't a time we had to wait in line.

Bathrooms and showers are great, with a nice design; they're spacious with lots of hooks and shelves for your belongings. There are also hair dryers and even hand towels -- somebody paid a lot of attention to small details here and we love it.

Common Spaces

While there aren't many common spaces, we still think it's one of the most social hostels we've been to, perhaps because everybody ends up hanging out in the same place -- the kitchen and dining area. Breakfast is included and it's pampering too! There are fresh fruits, bagels, and English muffins and Nutella! What a treat! And you can find yourself just sitting there for hours, chatting with people. The awesome folks at Firehouse Hostel even have a fantastic idea -- to give everyone a free beer as a welcome treat -- and we don't think there is any better way to console a weary traveler. The staff seem to be very chill and friendly. We wish we could have stayed longer! There is free Wi-Fi, which doesn't always work properly, but there is also a community computer, so that you're never stranded. The staff are happy to print out things like tickets for you (they did this for us at no extra cost).

Summary

These guys have really figured it out! This place comes with a decent price, a friendly and easygoing attitude, a cool concept, and an in-house bar. We couldn't be happier staying here.

• The Firehouse Hostel is located at 605 Brazos St, in the heart of Austin's downtown district. We are just steps away from an enormous selection of restaurants, bars, shops and attractions. Austin's historic 6th St, the epicenter of many of Austin's events, is only a block away. Local area attractions such as Barton Springs, Zilker Park, the State Capital, and The University of Texas are a short bus ride.
• From the Airport
• Driving:
• Upon exiting the airport turn left onto State Hwy 71 heading west. Stay on Hwy 71 exit I-35 N then take exit 234C. Turn left onto E 6th St Turn right onto Brazos St. There are two parking garages and two lots within two blocks of the Hostel .
• Bus
• The bus stops only a few blocks from our front door!
• Walk to the lower level of the ABIA and board bus 100 Inbound. Get off at 4th and Congress, cross the street going east. Walk 1 block to Brazos and turn left. Walk north 2 blocks and you have arrived. Look for the red awnings
• Supper Shuttle
• Supper Shuttle offers door to door drop off and pick up 24 hours a day 7 days a week
• Cost is $15 per person. Pre book your pick up at http://www.supershuttle.com/
• From the Greyhound Station
• Take the number 10 bus Southbound to the 6th and Congress St stop
• Walk one block east to Brazos St.
• Walk half a block North to 605 Brazos St
