Ozzie Pozzie Backpackers - Port Macquarie YHA Reviews

Basic backpackers

Everything you need for a few days stay in Port Macquarie -- this is independently run and so facilities are more basic than chain hostels but clean and well kept. There is a free games room which is open till 11pm as well as a tv room and plenty of common spaces including a kitchen. You can arrange a free pick up from the bus stop and for just $10 you can store bags (although the area isn't locked) and use the facilities until your bus the day you check out which is really good.

Ozzie Pozzie is the greatest! I came back 4 times during my tour of Australia as it felt like my 'home away from home'. Everyone was so friendly and welcoming; the facilities super clean; property well maintained; pool gorgeous on a hot sunny day (no chlorine -- bonus!); beautiful aviary and birds; all in all, very relaxed. I highly recommend Oz Poz to anyone travelling -- Port Macquarie is a sweet place with lots of options. Thanks to Richard, Phil, Brad, Laurie, Simon, and all the crew for a wonderful time.

Great place a must visit!!

Fantastic hostel!, very clean and very friendly people and staff. Lots of things to do! Pool, games room, separate tv room with cable and lots of movies, bike rental, nice court yards, big kitchen with enough fridge space, free internet on 4 stations. By rights the best hostel on the east coast and a must visit!!!!!!

Ozzie Pozzie Backpackers is a friendly and cheerful hostel in Port Macquarie, Australia. Whilst being a quite rundown building, the staff maintain an upbeat atmosphere and some added extras make it a decent place to rest your head if you can't get into the other hostels in town.

The Location

Based on a residential side street, there is onsite parking available for a limited number of cars. It's also close enough to the town that you can walk to the centre in about twenty minutes. To get to most of the beaches you'll need to catch a bus from the main road.

Rooms and Bathrooms

The dorm rooms and bathrooms are a bit of a disappointment, but they are however pretty clean, which is a plus. Sheets are provided (you make up the bed yourself), and as the rooms are only six person, you can get a good night's sleep. The bathrooms are old and very basic -- shower and toilet doors are very short, and there are only two of each per sex. The feeling is very much "public bathroom. The doors are often left open at night with the light on, so bugs are normally present after dark.

Common Spaces

The kitchen is spacious, with plenty of fridge space. However there is only four gas burners and one sink, so be prepared to wait. There's a decent number of tables in the kitchen itself to eat on. There's also a nice little outdoor courtyard with a number of benches and tables, as well as a hammock, for chilling out. The kitchen has two computers with free Wi-Fi, which is an excellent feature.

Around the corner from the kitchen there is a lounge area with two sofas, a TV with VHS player (and an old selection of VHS to choose from), and a fairly decent book exchange. The hostel's vibe is extremely laid back and low key. Staff intermingle with guests, and the communal areas are always buzzy. You're likely to make several friends during your stay here.

Ozzie Pozzie Hostel is a quirky place which is a bit rough around the edges, but ok for a night's sleep.

Cosy, relaxed, helpful

If I didn't have a time restraint I probably would've stayed longer. Ozzie Pozzie not only set me up with a kayak tour, but were really helpful if getting it all changed around for me when I got sick. The staff are the most friendly, welcoming people you could ask for and they made me feel right at home. The colourful decor gives the place a funky, islandy feel that's hard to find in hostels. Small and intimate, Ozzie Pozzie was a great find and made my time in Port just awesome (even though I was sick).

Friendly, great!

The hostel is just great. The owner is very friendly and there is lots to do in this little place. If I'm correct eight beaches, which are amazing! Go surfing with the dolphins on the lighthouse beach. The hostel has a pool and a backyard where everybody sits and talks about their travels. You can get bodyboards, surfboards, and mountain bikes. I had a very good time there with Christmas (free BBQ for everyone)! Don't make the mistake to stay there only for one night.

Loved it!

Very nice, helpful owners. Everything was clean and the atmosphere was very relaxed.

Perfect chilled place to hang around

I thought I'd let people know that it's changed hands. I stayed in June 2008 and it has recently been taken over by a fellow that has himself done a lot of traveling so he know what backpackers want. He spent lots of time with the guests answering questions, giving advice, cooking BBQs, and just making sure everyone was having a good time. I was cycling throughout the area and was only going to say a night and ended up staying for two because the place was so nice and clean and full of good people. Highly recommend it.

Had a great stay - staff is lovely and it was the perfect location for me at the time , would recommend if you staying in Port Macq

Really nice location, only a 10 min walk from the centre of town.

Staff are incredible. Friendly and attentive. The room is basic , however it was very quiet. The shower had hot water. I didn't use any other amenities yet I noticed the kitchen was very well stocked.

Location was perfect. Plenty of street parking. Easy walk into the CBD.

Check out was a dream. Highly recommend.

Hostel that really lacked in atmosphere. Staff were never around to seek advice.

room smelt like mould. All the facilities are old and broken.

The place was very cozy , rooms were clean and comfortable and staff was nice and helpful. Would recommend for sure.

Very nice location and amazing staff and a friendly environment. Would love to visit again.

Excellent stay in one of the nicest hostels I've been to, staff were really nice and helpful and the room was clean and comfortable

This is the most beautiful hostel you will ever see in your life. It is actually very beautiful! The French-speaking girl at the reception is the most friendly receptionist in the world. Facilities are amazingly well organised and clean.

Really enjoyed my stay here, stayed in a private room during the week and got plenty of peace and quiet. Facilities were clean.

Facilities decent kitchen had everything you needed and room was lovely - free upgrade. Staff were friendly. Hostel seemed to have only live ins in their late 40s. Not a backpacker hostel like expected. Was kept awake all night by a massive argument, could hear walls been punched and plates thrown and plenty of loud shouting well through the night.

Staff and overall atmospher was great

Liked: Probably the most clean hostel I have ever been in my life. The kitchen was always tidy and clean, there was a nice lady clenaing it daily. The rooms were also clean.Because it is winter, there weren't a lot of people staying at the hostel and even though I was booked in a 4 bed dormitory, I was the only one to stay in the room for 2 of the 3 nights I was there. It made me feel good to know that I was paying a lot less for what turned out to be a single room for two nights. Didn't like: They weren't too helpful with getting me from the bus station. They didn't come at the time I told them I would be there so I had to ask for a random stranger to take me to the hostel.

Liked: Pool table Didn't like: Great place friendly staff loved our stay

Liked: Very clean and the kitchen was immaculate and well equipped. Friendly atmosphere too. Didn't like: To snothing!

Liked: I liked the accommodation facilities and overall intimate atmosphere. Didn't like: It was very loud at night time. No aircon in my room.

Liked: Its a very relaxed atmosphere, there are enough activities in the area and the sunrise surfing is really nice, even for a first time surfer like myself. It is quiet at night which means youll actually get a good nights sleep. Didn't like: They are very strict on the 23h courtyard closing, which is a good thing, but they could be a bit more friendly in that.

Liked: When we arrived the staff were really helpful and welcoming, they showed us a map and suggested places to go. Due to there not being much dorm space we were upgraded to a double room! Which was great! The bathroom was separate to the dorms bathrooms and it was very clean and almost like having an ensuite! Absolutely loved the games room too, free ping pong, table football, pool and air hockey. Great to do in the evening or to kill time waiting for the shuttle to the bus! They also had free body boards (for a deposit) which were great to take to the local beach for the day! Loved it, would definitely come back! Didn't like: Nothing!
