Get to know Flensburg (no more "I wish I knew this before")

This section is dedicated to take away all your "I wish someone had told me that before I went!" experiences. This way, you can spend less time settling in, and more time making new friends in your chosen hostel. We share our insider knowledge of tips, tricks and important things to look out for in Flensburg.

Flensburg is the third-largest town in the German state of Schleswig-Holstein, located on the border with Denmark, and is therefore the most northern town on the country's mainland. With around eighty thousand inhabitants, the town is not exactly large, however it is still a pretty lovely place to stop, if you are traveling through this region. The city has train connections with regional Kiel and Neumünster, as well as Hamburg and Denmark, so it's not too hard to reach with public transport.

Situated at the Flensburg Fjord on the Baltic Sea, the city was once a particularly important trading spot. Nowadays, however, the town is peaceful and far from being a popular destination among international tourists. Nevertheless, getting an affordable place to sleep is not difficult. Just check near the train station for some good Flensburg hostel choices. As the town is relatively small, it is quite easy to visit most of the interesting places on foot, but there are also bus connections throughout Flensburg if you don't feel like walking too much.

The Old Town, with many buildings from centuries ago, is well preserved and charming to walk through, but in terms of big attractions, Flensburg does not really stand out, although it offers a couple of interesting museums. The nearby town of Glücksburg, however, is a home to the famous Glücksburg Castle, which is the largest water castle in Germany and one of the most important Renaissance buildings in this part of Europe. Be sure to check it out if you are staying in the region.
