Get to know Weinheim (no more "I wish I knew this before")

This section is dedicated to take away all your "I wish someone had told me that before I went!" experiences. This way, you can spend less time settling in, and more time making new friends in your chosen hostel. We share our insider knowledge of tips, tricks and important things to look out for in Weinheim.

Weinheim is a small town in Baden-Württemberg state in Germany, known also as "The Two-Castle City" for its two fortresses overlooking the town. Windeck, the oldest of the two, was built in the early twelfth century to protect the Lorsch monastery, while the Wachenburg is a lot newer. It was built in the early twentieth century as a memorial and meeting spot for the Weinheim Senior Convention and its students. Both castles can be reached via a nice hiking trail and offer some wonderful views of the town.

Speaking of hiking trails, there are plenty of them in the region. The town lies in the Bergstraße route of the mountain range Odenwald, and therefore offers plenty of opportunities for mountain biking, hiking, and outdoor recreation in general. And in case swimming or other water activities are your thing, you can visit the lovely Waidsee Lake for just a little money. In terms of tourist attractions, there isn't a whole lot to expect. Besides the mentioned castles, old town, market square, the castle palace with its beautiful park and the nearby exotic forest and botanical garden are well worth visiting, but this is pretty much it.

There are two train stations in the town, which connect it with Frankfurt, Hamburg, and other larger German cities, so getting in and out of Weinheim with public transport is not much of a problem. Options for hostels in Weinheim, however, are very slim; this is not surprising, since the town is small and far from being a popular tourist destination. You can still find some pretty decent dorms between Lake Waidsee and the main train station, but expect to pay slightly more than usual.
