Get to know Figueres (no more "I wish I knew this before")

The birthplace of artist Salvador Dali, Figueres is home to one of Spain’s most-visited museums – the Teatre-Museu Gala Salvador Dali, designed by Dali himself. Located near the French border, this town boasts a thriving arts community, an innovative culinary scene, great wines, and beautiful Spanish beaches.

Most tourists stick to Barcelona for a Spanish city experience, but Figueres offers a slight change of pace. With its historic Old Town, complete with a square and a castle, the architecture in Figueres is classically Spanish and offers plenty for tourists to explore. The town’s laid back atmosphere, relaxing cafes and quiet restaurants, and busy hostels make it a great option for travelers looking to experience more of what Spain has to offer.

Summer months are filled with festivals and markets, making this a popular time for tourists to visit Figueres. Hostels and hotels will be harder to come by, but since this town’s major industry is tourism, there is plenty of room to accommodate the influx of visitors. In addition to the Dali museum, the beaches, and Old Town, there is still plenty to explore in Figueres.

Restaurants here serve a number of local Catalan specialties, including oxtail soup, fuet, paella, butifarra, and gaspatxo. Typical Catalan meals involve meat and beans, but there are also plenty of options for foreign tourists who want to eat more familiar meals. Figueres has a growing culinary scene – and a fantastic selection of locally-made wines. A car is recommended for visitors who hope to tour some of the region’s wineries.

After flying into the Girona/Costa Brava Airport, tourists can take a bus from the airport to the Girona train station, and ride the train the rest of the way to Figueres. There is also a train that runs from Barcelona to Girona and on to Figueres, for backpackers looking to reach their hostel here.
