This may be the most talked about hostel in Europe. It has an almost legendary reputation among backpackers for attracting a young, chill, laid-back crowd. And the place fits that vibe perfectly. But if you're looking for a spottlessly clean place with a family atmosphere, this isn't it. The bathrooms and rooms aren't always squeeky clean but it's a fun hostel for young backpackers who want to stay up all night socializing and sleep in late.
There is a big common area with a bar and pool table, and best of all, a big "no shoes allowed" pillow area on the floor in front of the window where you can sit and chat or just hang out. There is also a nice big air filter to keep the air free of smoke. People tend to stay up at all hours here, and you'll find as many people sleeping in the dorms during the day as at night. The hostel is right in the center of downtown, close the the train station and the famous red light district. If you can't get a reservation, your only other option is to show up very early in the morning to wait in line outside the front door before 8:30 AM (or even earlier during the high season is recommended). If you can't get a reservation and you aren't arriving early in the morning you should reserve another Amsterdam hostel for your first night.
