Makuto Backpackers Hostel is a busy and popular hostel with young people from all over the world. The famous Alhambra can be reached from the hostel on foot or by mini bus from the main road. Situated in an old quarter of the city, it gives you a sense of being in old Granada. At the same time, because it is located on a very crowded narrow street, it can be very noisy at night. Several dogs in the neighborhood bark, particularly at night thus it may be difficult to get some decent sleep at night. You can also hear the neighbors talking and passersby talking late at night as well as very early in the morning.
There are two bedrooms on the street side of the house. They are very small -- six beds in a room feels too cramped in. The room can be quite hot in summer -- there are no fans or air conditioning in the rooms. The beds are quite squeaky. Besides these two bedrooms, the hostel has put in bunk beds in the alcove in the hallway, covered by curtains for some privacy. They have also created sleeping spaces in the loft in the hallway which provide private space but can be very hot in summer since there's no window up in the loft. There are also beds in the basement area.
There are three shower stalls and three toilets in the bathroom. The showers have push buttons for water, which have no control for water temperature. For hot summer days the water is just too hot. One of the shower stall button only provides water for five seconds so it's very inconvenient to take a decent shower. The other stall buttons last about twenty seconds. The shower stalls are small but manageable but their floors and tiles are rather scummy.
Lockers are available with a deposit. The kitchen is available for cooking, but there is only one small electric stove with two burners, so if you try to cook at the busy time, you may need to wait a while. The hostel offers various meals daily at reasonable prices and the bar also offers several different drinks daily.
The hostel offers various common spaces for their guests to relax and hang out. It has a nice courtyard where people can hang out and eat. There are several hammocks in the courtyard too. They also have a "chill room" where people can hang out to smoke and relax, as well as a TV room.
This hustle bustle hostel attracts many young people from all over the world. Although overall sleeping spaces are very crowded and jammed, with their many common hangout spaces, you can relax and meet other young people. However, if you're looking for a quiet place for decent sleep at night, this place may not be your best choice.
