Get to know Chipiona (no more "I wish I knew this before")

This section is dedicated to take away all your "I wish someone had told me that before I went!" experiences. This way, you can spend less time settling in, and more time making new friends in your chosen hostel. We share our insider knowledge of tips, tricks and important things to look out for in Chipiona.

Chipiona is a town in the province of Cadiz, Andalusia, Spain. Chipiona is a seaside town in southern Spain that looks out to Atlantic Ocean. It is located in the lower part of the valley of the Guadalquivir River, near the Strait of Gibraltar -- because of this strategic location and being near the opening of Mediterranean Sea, Chipiona is the site of the tallest and largest lighthouse in Spain, the third-tallest lighthouse in all of Europe, and the seventeenth-tallest traditional lighthouse in the world.

The Chipiona Light or Punta Del Perro Light (meaning Dog Point) lighthouse has been part of the life and history of Chipiona. Punta Del Perro is also the name of the area in Chipiona. Even in ancient times, there have been accounts of an older and now extinct lighthouse used by the Romans to navigate the river, the sea, and other nearby waters. The old lighthouse was comparable to the Lighthouse of Alexandria and lent its name to Chipiona.

Like most town in Andalusia and Southern Spain, the history of Chipiona has been stained with bloody conquest from the Visigoths, Moors, and Christians, and the succeeding wars of the kingdoms of Spain. Because of its exposed location, Chipiona is also subject to various natural calamities like tsunamis and earthquakes. Most of the attraction sites in Chipiona are testament to the rich history of Chipiona, like the Castle of Chipiona, the Lighthouse, Catholic churches, and various museums.

Like most town in Andalusia, Chipiona is heavily influenced by Christian tradition and Moorish designs. The town holds many festivals and celebrations that are Christian in tradition like Carnival and Easter but have Moor elements to them.

Chipiona is pleasant to visitors who enjoy seaside and river attractions like beaches and marine activities, like boating, sailing, and river cruising. Because the town looks out to the Atlantic Ocean, Chipiona has the one of the best sunset-watching areas in the world.

Chipiona hostels have the eclectic design and atmosphere of an Andalusian country feel, whitewashed walls, metalworks, and colorful decorative designs, all of which were influenced by Christian, Roman, and Moorish elements. There are plenty of hostels in Chipiona and they are all accommodating to every visitor and tourist.
