Get to know Kristiansand (no more "I wish I knew this before")

This section is dedicated to take away all your "I wish someone had told me that before I went!" experiences. This way, you can spend less time settling in, and more time making new friends in your chosen hostel. We share our insider knowledge of tips, tricks and important things to look out for in Kristiansand.

The 5th largest city of Norway, Kristiansand is situated on the southeastern shores of the country. Home to approximately 80,000 people, Kristiansand is an interesting city with a long history (dating back to the middle of the 17th century) and many activities.

You can reach the city by many forms of transport. Kjevik Airport (KRS), which is the closest airport to the city, is about 12 kilometers away. There are also many train and bus connections to the city. They also have a ferry service running between Denmark (Hirtshals) and Kristiansand.

Getting around the city is easiest if you use the public buses. However, the main central area of the city is very compact and you don't need any special means of transport (the city center is picturesque and makes for a nice walk, too).

When you visit a Kristiansand hostel, there are lots of things to do and see. The former fish market area is home to many nice restaurants today, and is a good place to have lunch or dinner. The Old Town (Posebyen) area isn't very large but gives you a glimpse of what things looked like in here in the past. There is also a zoo / amusement park in the city called Kristiansand Dyrepark.

The hostels in Kristiansand are of high quality, but like most of Norway, a bit on the expensive side due to very high living standards. You'll pay about 25 - 30 euros for a bed in a dorm room, and a bit more for twin / double rooms. Kristiansand hostel staff are often a great source of information on what to do around the city, so remember to ask them.
