Get to know San Gimignano (no more "I wish I knew this before")

This section is dedicated to take away all your "I wish someone had told me that before I went!" experiences. This way, you can spend less time settling in, and more time making new friends in your chosen hostel. We share our insider knowledge of tips, tricks and important things to look out for in San Gimignano.

San Gimignano can be compared to a small Italian Manhattan – with fourteen impressive medieval towers rising from the hills of Tuscany and reaching to the skies. When the town was first settled as a comune in 1199, villagers flaunted their wealth and power by building towers to complete with those of their neighbours. Despite a plague wiping out most of the town in 1348, the towers have remained – providing an alluring destination for tourists looking to explore this historical marvel set in an enchanting rural countryside.

The unforgettable skyline of this medieval village is still wrapped in protective walls that encircle the entire community – preserving not only the town’s towers, but also the Palazzo Comunale, the Collegiate Church, and the Church of Sant’ Agostino. The structures represent notable examples of the Romanesque and Gothic architecture styles that were popular during the 14th and 15th centuries, and are filled with spectacular frescoes that have been uniquely preserved.

The β€œHistoric Centre of San Gimignano” has been designated a UNESCO World Heritage Site, further recognizing this opportunity for tourists to step into the past with a stay at a hostel or hotel here. Accommodations are limited in this small down, but guests can find something to suit their budget, whether it’s a hotel, hostel, or holiday rental.

Through the town’s historic gates, tourists can venture down the charming streets to examine the medieval architecture and visit the many piazzas that make this town such a picturesque destination in Tuscany – the subject of many famous works of art. A hostel stay here is sure to provide endless opportunities for both relaxation and education.

There is no train station within San Gimignano, but guests can travel to the nearby Poggibonsi station and then take a bus from the station to San Gimignano. Buses are relatively frequent here, even from Florence. Car rentals are also available, and are recommended for travelers who plan to explore more of the Tuscan countryside.
