Our handwritten guide on Backpacking Rhineland-Palatinate

Rhineland-Palatinate is a region in Germany bordering Saarland. It is full of historic diversity, ancient sites like castles and palaces, wine regions, and the Rhine River. This is the most Western state in Germany, with Belgium as a direct neighbor. It features little towns, steep vineyards, old castles, local delicacies, and hilly countryside.

When staying at a hostel in Rhineland-Palatinate, you should check out the Ahr Valley. This is the region best known for its red wine and is called the Red Wine Paradise. There is a number of hiking trails winding through this valley. Spas and healing facilities are available in the town of Bad Neuenahr-Ahrweiler. You can also take a trip down to Eifel, a region covered with volcanic formations, forests, and valleys.

Activities like hiking, biking and exploring can be performed in Eifel. You can enjoy the landscape in the Eifel National Park too. Other hiking trails in the area include the mountain range called Hunsruck, home to the Saar-Hunsruck-Steig hiking trail which looks down on the twin rivers – the Rhine and the Moselle. You can also challenge yourself on the slopes of the Erbeskopf mountain or explore the Hunsruck-Hochwald National Park.

Once you find a hostel near the Palatinate region, you’re in luck. This area has many vineyards and is home to hospitable locals. The German Wine Route, a popular wine tasting route, winds through here. The Palatinate Forest Nature Park is also a great place to escape, with multiple hiking trails available to trek through. This isn’t the only famous wine region in the area, either. The Rheinhessen region is the largest in Germany and is known for the quality of its liquor and cuisine.

Other places and activities to check out while staying at a hostel or hotel in the region include the Nurburgring, home to the Truck Grand Prix and other races. You can also take a ride on the Koblenz Cable Car, which rides down the Rhine Valley. Take some time to see the geyser in Andernach, one of the highest in the world. Other dizzyingly high attractions include the Suspension Bridge Geierlay, the longest suspension bridge in Germany running between Sosberg and Morsdorf.

Finally, be sure to check out the palaces, castles, cemeteries, and above all else, the wine that makes Rhineland-Palatinate famous as a region.
